I need a motel recommendation for Kitty Hawk/Nags Head.
We have enjoyed First Colony Inn. It is not the least expensive place in town, but it is the only one with which I have somewhat recent experience.

As most of us will say, it is the south and the south gets humid and hot. However, there are usually only a couple weeks' worth of nasty weather spread over July, August, and September.

Swansboro and the surrounding areas benefit from the proximity of water. It is the very rare day when we do not have coastal breezes. Our first summer here we were able to sleep with the windows open from April through mid-July and from late September through mid-November.

Last year we had heat earlier and the fall wasn't as warm.

What you will find is that the coast does not get as hot as inland North Carolina. We have often left for a trip when the temperature was in the mid-eighties on the coast. By the time we are twenty miles inland, the temperature is in the mid-nineties. When we get to Raleigh the temperature can be one hundred or better. Then we see it cool slightly as we head into the Virginia mountains.

Once in a while even on the water you go seeking breezes. We were fishing on the upper parts of the White Oak River last July. My wife finally told me that we were either going home or I could find some breezes. We headed out to Bogue Inlet and found much more pleasant weather.

Aside from that the humidity is something you get used to eventually. I find this area less humid than Columbia, MD and Williamsburg, Virginia, but the fact that I lived in Columbia just after moving from Canada might have something to do with it.

This map will let you see all the water in the area. Until the water gets really warm in late July and August we are normally protected from the heat.

cool map !

thanks for the info, I looked at some historical weather info and it appears that the coast does stay cooler as you said - that's a big plus for me.

This area might be on our radar in a few years; my husband is retired military and spent time at Camp Lejeune many years ago, so we're thinking about a return in the future. It's probably changed a lot since he was there, though!

It is an area that changes, but it also retains enough of the old that most people see a lot that they remember. The biggest change that most people notice is Highway 24 being four lanes. I will have to ask someone the exact date on that, but we had a friend who was at Lejeune who visited last summer and that was the biggest change that he could see.

Downtown Swansboro has not changed much. There are lots of old buildings there. They just get used for different things. Now many of them are cute shops.

It is a great area for a summer or a spring vacation. The azaleas and dogwoods started blooming this past weekend.

Good luck in figuring out where to settle.

My wife and I settled on the Cavalier Motel. It got really good reviews on all the various travel websites, and it looks to be a really cool place.

There is one on the beach road bypass and several in Manteo. Been a while. I can't recall the names. Google them in Manteo and Nags Head, something will come up. Or go the route of search at NC dept. of tourism. Have a great time.

Oh ... another idea is to contact "Christine" at Southern Shores Realty's rental department. She's a straight shooter 261-2000. They have about 700 private houses that are set up for year round weekend/weekly rentals. You bring the towels and groceries, or eat out, they clean the place after you're gone. They have all sizes. Best breakfast on the beach Jolly Roger mile post 4 beach road. Best karaoke, Jolly Roger.
