thanks,
Here's what I would recommend for a great weekend - Head to Wilmington via hwy 74 - Once you get to Wilmington (which has plenty to see and do) take hwy 421 to Carolina Beach and Kure Beach - from there head to Fort Fisher. The drive is along the coast and the Fort is right on the water. After you tour the fort, take the car ferry to Southport - a great ride across the Cape Fear River. Have fun exploring Southport and Oak Island before you have to head back home on Sunday
Plan on at least 4.5 hours to Wilmington from Huntersville.
After you've visited the coast for the first time, you should consider another trip where you go to places like New Bern, Bath, etc. and then visit the Outer Banks.
It is quite a trip, though - much farther than Wilmington. The good news about the trip to Wilmington is that more sections of 74 have been completed (you no longer have to endure the long 2 lane section around Lumberton), so you might shave 10 or 15 minutes off the trip.
Above suggestions are great! You can add to that Emerald Isle. Pleasant place, plenty of good eats, some entertainment, Fort Macon on the East (upper) end. The NC Aquarium at Mid point of the island. Nice place to ride bikes. About 20 miles end to end with several narrow points that you can view the ocean and sound from one spot. Lots of rentals. Historic Beaufort is just across the bridge on the eastern end of the island. Several golf courses within short drives, and plenty of fishing both surf and Gulf Stream charters, along with kayak and jet ski rentals.
CHildren what ages - ? The OBX I believe has water slides, batting cages, miniature golf etc - not to mention good old sitting on the beach and swimming (can't swear to it as we havent been there in a while but I would imagine there's typical water sports, also kite flying etc), it may not be as elaborate or $$ as some typical tourist areas but there are things to do.
These trips sound wonderful. One question, is there anything in these areas for children?
wilmington has the Wilmington Children's museum (downtown) and the serpentarium (downtown) as well as Jungle Rapids (small) amusement park (Oleander Drive) and a Chuck E Cheese. The Fort Fisher aquarium is also very child friendly.
