Default Outer Banks Vacation

I havent vacationed in the Outer Banks in 7 or 8 years, has tourism drastically went up since then or is it about the same?

I miss it, but if it's pretty much ruined now, then I wanna know where else around that area would be a good spot to vacation

Hi -

I just joined this site today. I live near Raleigh, work in Raleigh ... but the outerbanks is where I love to be - so I named myself "outerbanxious"!

Saw your post asking about the outerbanks vacation options. We have a two br end unit condo w/ boat dock, swimming pool, has a sound view and one block across the street to the ocean. We rent it out in the hot summer months from June - Aug - but use it ourselves other months. If interested I will be glad to send pictures, etc.

To answer your question, it is the most relaxing place in the world. The southern part of the outerbanks is still awesome. No commercialization in terms of chain restaurants and fast food joints. However, there are the locally run restaurants as well as a Food Lion and other necessities.

Let me know if you get "outerbanxious"! Call 919-818-9019 for information on renting our place for a summer week!

I've been vacationing at Atlantic Beach for longer than i can remember. Granted, i didn't typically pay attention to tourism etc when i was younger, but i think the the Atlantic Beach area has changed a bit. They've taken out several of the docks to make way for more houses. This has changed the beach some, but not too terribly.

they've also gotten rid of a lot of the carnival type stuff that was directly over the bridge from Morehead city. This was also, i am led to believe, to make way for more houses. Beaufort too has had some changes, there seem to be less tour boats going out. The Lookout Express no longer is in town, and to get to Cape Lookout you have to take one of the smaller ferries. Because of this i believe that the donkey train is also out-of-service on Lookout.

While there are still a lot of Wings/Eagles, it seems like a lot of the smaller stores are moving, or being sold to make way for new housing. Not all of the new housing seems like it's for vacationers, i would not be surprised if some of it was inhabited year-round. Of course, i haven't been there for 8 months, but this was the case last august. There has also been a lot of building on the sound-side as well.

Atlantic Beach seems to be as it always has been, a great place to sit on the beach, play in the waves, and relax the day away.

I agree Skids. You weren't exactly looking for an ad were you?

I moved from OBX 18 months ago after 10 years there. Its still about the same from Kitty Hawk south. Now, Corolla has grown outrageously. Its impossible to get to or from almost any day of the week. Rodanthe etc takes a while to get to, but may be more to your liking. My brotherinlaw loves that area for fishing.
