Oak Island beach rental
We have an opportunity for a beach rental on Oak Island this upcoming weekend. I'm not particularly sold on the idea - yet.
I don't know anything about this place. Any comments? Thoughts on what to do/see if we go?
The boys (not all mine!) are 3-15.
TIA!

The In-laws have a house on the island; it’s nice and quiet not overcrowded. It also has a long sandy beach.
You can also go visit Southport or head over to Bald Head Island. There’s your usual beach activities like mini putt and a movie theater over on the mainland. Some good home cooking restaurants.

We are actually headed to Oak Island on June 7th (me, my wife, our 17mo old son, and our dog), so we have tons of information on the area we have received from the rental agency and from co-workers who have stayed there in the past. Feel free to send a DM if you have any specific questions, or we can try to answer them here if that is easier.
In terms of what we plan to do, first and foremost we are going to just enjoy each other and have a nice relaxing family vacation with no planned out itinerary or anything like that. It's lack of a touristy feel is the main reason we chose Oak Island over some of the other options. It is close enough to other places though, so when we get the urge to have an adventure, we won't have very far to travel at all.
Since we are staying for a full week, we definitely want to check out the Fort Fisher Aquarium and we plan to take the ferry to get there, so we can feed the seagulls along the way. We also plan to check out the Wilmington Children's Museum as we have heard tons of great things about it.
For kids older than our little guy, you have nearby options like old jails, a battleship, forts, burial grounds, historic towns, a skate park, an alligator adventure, putt putt golf, mopeds, scooters, bi-plane rides, etc etc (can you tell we received tons of brochures LOL), so I am sure you guys will have a great time whatever you end up doing.
Again, feel free to DM if you have any specific questions as we are more than happy to help if we can.
Have fun!

We stumbled upon Oak Island on our first trip to Myrtle Beach. We were new to the area and didn't know about the whole bike week thing! Obviously, we couldn't stay at Myrtle so we headed north and ended up at Oak Island. We loved it there!! Its a nice beach to go to if you don't want to be over crowded and just have a nice relaxing vacation. We continued to go back several times until we moved to SC and now we go to Charleston instead, but Oak Island is great! We didn't really do much there as we usually only went down for a weekend and some R & R, so I can't help you much on what to do, but I would still recommend giving it a shot!

Could you please tell me where you found a rental that accepts pets?
Thanks so much.

I have been there one time and loved it! It seemed to be a nice quiet little town there on the ocean, does not have much neon at night (i.e. bars and night-life) but a bit more quiet. The beach was never crowded, it's very clean. Like some of the other posts mentioned Southport is not that far and they have shopping and other things to do.

It sounds like an ideal spot to get away from the world.
