Jacksonville is growing at a crazy pace. The Marine bases are consolidating so there is a lot of growth there. The baby boomers are retiring and retired military want to be near a base. Housing costs are climbing. While you'll be able to find most everything you need in Jacksonville Wilmington is a short drive.
Snead's Ferry seems to be having changing times. They have reassessed much of the property and many of the long time residents cannot afford the tax burden and are selling out. I am seeing it thru a third party so I don't know the exact details but it appears that they will be trying to develop anything with water access into high $$$ condos.
What time I have spent in Snead's Ferry has been very pleasant with something of a resort atmosphere/fishing village persona.
I hope you like hot summers.
I don't know about indoor hockey facilities. Perhaps Wilmington? But in about a two hour drives you can go up to Raleigh and see the world champs.
Sorry I cannot offer anymore specific info.

Wink to hapaleeretired

Hapaleeretired

...thank you for your reply. i was giving up hope. i guess that is what i am looking for... a resort, small town atmosphere. where we can go fishing and bike riding, etc. right now we are living in altamonte springs florida and it is gorgeous. we love it. we live on a lake were the kids can go fishing, we have a pool, alligators to watch, tropical birds and trees. sounds like paradise, right. well, it also comes with a huge price tag. its a $1200 a month apartment. i dont think that we will be able to purchase a house anytime soon or could come to terms with spending $260,000 on a 3/2 home. so... we are searching for our paradise some place else. my husband accepted a job working in camp lejeune and until i can get work, hopfully we will be able to survive on one income. i will be looking into a realtor job and hopefully with the growing craze i will finally be in the right place at the right time. one more thing. do you have any info on the schools? i hear that they arent that good. is this true? i heard the same thing about florida schools but ended up pretty happy with those. thank you again

Hi, I am actually not "hapaleeretired", I am his daughter. He told me about you because I happen to live in Sneads Ferry, NC. We love it. We are from Jacksonville NC and moved to Sneads Ferry because we had a chance to buy a place on the water. This sounds just like the place you are looking for. We also have an ice rink 30 minutes away, the kids play hockey there too. What area are you going to be renting in? Let me know if you would rather build. My husband is a builder too. Good Luck.
