Given the fact that you were unable to even get to the beach and gave up indicates to me you are frustrated with your locale. I was referring to the traffic in the Oak Island area, not the Wrightsville Beach area. It only takes us 15 minutes to get to the beach from Southport, and 30 minutes to get to Fort Fisher or Bald Head Island by way of ferry. Possibly, you should consider relocating yourself.

actually, it was another poster who called it a dump. I said it was filled with rednecks beyond the privacy fences. I had company for the weekend, as I know never to go to the beach during memorial day. you also are not being truthful about the traffic going from oak island to southport. I've sat at the light at golden corral for longer than 15 minutes. you must do the bulk of your driving at 3am. I have considered relocating, but that's got nothing to do with the area. it has to do with the job market in a tourist town. I just prefer to be honest with people who choose to relocate and not blow smoke up their you know what.

Actually the Golden Corral is no longer there, so I would recommend you check your compass, and pleez don't make me call you out, as someone who doesn't know what they are talking about, because I will in a NY second. Either back your opinions up with facts, or get off this forum. You are contributing nothing more than your own misery. You are not being honest just blowing smoke, in which direction and for what purpose I don't know, but I would recommend you blow it elsewhere, we don't want it nor do we need it. It's your smoke, pleez do us all a favor and blow up your know where.
I am so sorry but you sound like a very miserable person. If there is anything we can do to help, please let us know.

I know my facts. the golden corral went out of business because of all the empty subdivisions and foreclosures in brunswick county. most people are coming to the realization that moving in next to trailer parks, over paying for homes, and having nothing to do isn't as great as it sounds in the real estate agent provided brochures.
I am actually quite happy. I had a great weekend with family. ate some good food and had an all around good time. I was able to do all this because I didn't live in brunswick county, I live in wilmington. there is actually stuff to do here. I think you sound like the misrable one. I can imagine that as a real estate agent in brunswick county, you must be. probably haven't had a sale in months. then along comes this hot shot know it all telling everyone the truth about your sales region.
I also enjoy how you attempt to try to get me to stop posting on a public forum. ok mam, I will take my marching orders from you.

Since you do not reside in this area, I am at a loss as to why you continually put it down. Actually another restaurant has replaced Golden Corral, and the second bridge is almost completed that will allow travelers from 211 quicker access to Oak Island. If this were such a dire area, I doubt they would have had funding to build.
Actually I have been very busy this year, more so than last, some Buyers see the value of this market, and the future investment their purchases will produce. Every market is local, and it appears you have a dislike of Realtors. I do not know what your profession is, but I actually enjoy mine, and assisting others seeking to relocate to the area. Since you are not a Realtor, and do not live here, your opinions once again are not based on facts.
Actually many people on this forum have relocated to the area, or purchased second homes, so I guess they are lumped into what you have classified as uneducated consumers.
Please stay in Wilmington we only want nice, well rounded folks here, who know what they are talking about. If you have a beef with Realtors, than that is your problem to sort out.

so they have funding for a bridge? is that really the argument you are going with to show how prosperous the area is? government extorts money. that's how they get the funding. there are actually several informative and HONEST realtors on this site. I worked in brunswick county for 4 years, so I know a little bit about the area. my opinions are absolutely based on facts. they are based on my own experience. brunswick county is old retired people, and total rednecks. plus like 2 strip malls. oh, I went to brunswick county this weekend to check out the largest subdivision in the area, the bluffs. are they even building there anymore, or are things so bad that they have shut down? did all the builders go bankrupt? has anyone bought the dead project "the preserve" on oak island, or is still a wasteland?
to everyone wanting to move to brunswick county, if you have a hunger for mcdonalds, or the taco bell KFC combo, by all means, head down to brunswick county. just don't be shocked at the amount of rednecks you will run into at wal mart. do yourself a favor. consider wilmington or pender county first. much nicer beaches than the ones at the mouth of the cape fear river. see, I have nothing to gain or lose from people moving there, so I am gonna give them my experience of the area. they can take it how they want, but my opinion will not be biased.

Wow, you are so misinformed.Who needs people like you down here anyways. You must of had a very limiting exposure during your time here to have such a short minded opinion of BC.

what do you care to contest? I am not at all misinformed. I spent 12 hours a day for 4 years in brunswick county. I think people who want an honest opinion about an area are glad to have people like me here. I suggest pender over brunswick. like I said before, I am not a real estate agent, so I have nothing to gain, nor lose, from my opinion about brunswick county.

I tried really hard to stay out of this, since I have upset SeaShellbelle in the past about my informed views on Oak Island. But I got to tell you, if the only fact based opinions come from Realtors or residents, that puts the rest of us in a pickle.
I also am certain the statement about getting to the beach in 15 minutes is misleading. Yeah it might happen at 2 am, but not during the weekend push (when most of us want to go).
However in the interest of fairness, I called my MIL, LONG TIME OAK ISLAND homeowner, and asked her about the traffic, getting on the island over Easter. And I qoute..."We got here Wednesday and left on Tuesday. We know better than to mess with that traffic. " She then went on about Thelma Lou, or someone giving up and getting back on the island, and thank God Food Lion is on the island now, so they do not have to fight the traffic. I think she falls in the informed category.
I expect the traffic situation WILL IMPROVE with the second bridge. I hope so. I used to live there, but I do not go back for a number of the reasons cited.
In the interst of full disclosure, Wilmington and its quagmire of poor roads, tourist, and stop lights ain't much better.
If either of you would spend time at MHC or Beaufort, you would quickly forget about Oak Island/Southport and Wilmington. At least I did.
Two final thoughts, and I ain't responding to personal attacks:
1. True natives will lay a little "Brumswick" County on you. Try it, you all will like it, and
2. I don't care who you are, FinalSays comment about the combo KFC/Taco Bell was funny. Those guys went to my church and I taught their daughter when we lived there. They have done very well, assuming the same folks own it, and they are GREAT people, but the sentence/
thought struck me as funny.

I'll stick to the topic of dog owners and the beaches.
From what I see, the owners clean up after the dogs and comply with the poop scoop ordinance with few exceptions (there are always rude people who think just this once....) Poop not a problem.
But SO many dog owners do not follow the leash laws. That is a huge peeve of mine as I have 2 very young kids in tow on the beaches and it ticks me off- I have only lived here for 1.5-2 years...my husband's family has been for generations..so I am very familiar with the beaches. And just in the time I have lived here I have had several- like 4 or 5- incidences with unleashed dogs on the beach, out of their owners' control- all were HUGE dog with the exception of one mean little snapper...of great concern to me, the dogs were almost aggressive in these cases and were Rottweilers (2 in one case), a German Shep, and Pit Bulls. Why oh why do 90 year olds take their 80 pound pit bulls and rottweilers out on the beach?? Off leash?! I know these dogs can be socialized and have known some very friendly pit bulls, I have also known of rottweilers to turn on their owner for no apparent reason after 8 years. And when dogs are around tiny kids they are unpredictable, in my cases normally my kids were not paying the dogs any attention and the beaches were not crowded and as the dogs approached, they would get edgy and tense up and in 2 cases actually tried to lunge our way. One man hit his dog with a stick (way to go Moe) and the other hooked the leashes on the 2 rotts but if the dogs had actually gone after us I know he could not have controlled them. That experience was when I had an infant and it made me consider carrying actual weapons to be able to stop a dog permanently. In the case of the 2 dogs, they were so bad and the man struggled with them, and I was considering actually making a phone call to the sheriff's dept- and wished I had when he turned around at some point and brought them back by us.
Certain breeds should not be on the beaches at all, I know this is a controversial statement but a lot of dog owners put kids down and take it to a "dogs welcome, my dog has as much right to be here as your kid and if you don't like it you can keep the brats at home" attitude. I am thinking purely from a safety stance and no dog trumps a human- if someone thinks so, they better make sure their dog does not get aggressive with my kids unleashed because now I keep something with me to deal with that. Contrary to popular belief, I will win that one- Fido won't.
(I love dogs- just hate stupid dog owners and people who refuse to acknowledge it when their dog is aggressive and live in denial, thinking they don't have to be cautious because their "baby" would never hurt anyone. My cousin is like this, and her dog has sent at least 2 people to the ER for stitches. And she was not even sorry and did nothing to prevent it from happening again and would still tell people to walk on inside her gate because the dog wouldn't hurt a fly, knowing the dog had already bitten people- if her dog had bitten me the dog would be guaranteed not to bite again if you know what I mean)...and as a parent, I know to keep my kids away from strange dogs. I don't let them run up to pet the cute doggie.

I moved to Brunswick a little less than 2 years ago from the Charlotte area and am still not used to it. I will comment as honestly as I can.
1. I do NOT think the beaches are any nicer in New Hanover or Pender than Brunswick. They're comparable, to me. I have my favorite spots....different places I like for different reasons...but there's some nice beach "at the mouth of" the river. Some very pretty spots inland along the ICW too.
2. It is true, there is not much to do here and I would honestly rather visit than live here, I miss the things to do, shopping choices (even things so simple as grocery stores and fast food choices)...there are some rednecks yeah but I am an NC native...I can tell the difference between a "country" person and a redneck same way I can tell the difference between the retirees and tourists who have slovenly or rude ways or are great people. Some people label all Southerners as rednecks just by the lifestyle in general so I don't know what you mean by redneck, but it seems it's being used as a slam. I live in a nice home, and while I don't have a problem with trailers, I don't really care for them being so close to nicer houses because here you DO see very nice homes right next to run-down trailers that have crap in the yard and are junkpiles. You also see nice doublewides set on nice foundations with pretty yards and lots of land, I don't see why anyone would have a problem with the latter. I don't judge people by their housing except in one respect- I like well maintained and clean yards not junk piles. I empathize with not wanting to live next to bad neighbors or ugly property.
3. I am sick of Wal-mart and hate that it's the main place to shop for a lot of things here! I think this will change over the years. Not everyone who shops at Wal-mart is a redneck! Where would DOnald Trump shop in this immediate (Southern Brunswick county) area when he needs something really quick??Bet your biscuits he'd go to Wal-mart if they had something he needed.
4. I think the doctors here for adults suck compared to the quality of healthcare I am used to in the Concord and Charlotte area. Sucks bad. But I have found better doctors for my kids for which I am grateful, I love their eye doctor, the dentist is the best pediatric dentist I have ever seen or dreamed of- he trained the one we liked in Charlotte as it turnes out. But I hate the doctors for adults. Hate the health care around here.
My husband grew up here, is happy to be back, loves it here (is not a redneck)...I am one who likes living in a very rural, country area and having room to garden, ATV, etc....I like living on acres....however I also like to be convenient to cities which I find lacking here, I do not like WIlmington.
I don't like it here much personally. But I have to say the redneck comments and big put downs are not accurate. The one plus Wilmington has over where I'd rather be is that you are not in a rat race here even in peak traffic. "Crowded" here even with tourists is just NOT the same as an average day in Charlotte nor is the crime! I am still more used to living back there than here. And homesick.
Finally I will address those who do qualify as rednecks- yeah there are some pretty idiotic ones here. Yeah they get on my nerves. They don't care.
