Summer is off to a great start in Carolina Beach
It looks like summer is off to a great start at Carolina Beach. After many years of neglect, the boardwalk has undergone a beautiful face lift and families are returning to the area in droves. Numerous new businesses have moved in to the former empty boardwalk buildings such as several ice cream/candy shops, sandwich/sub shops, arcade/old school family games, restaurants, art studios, and more are on the way. In addition, the town has added amusement rides to the boardwalk and there are a whole slew of new free family events as shown on the Boardwalk Makeover website.
Judging by these YouTube videos from this year's Memorial Day weekend, everyone is really pleased with the renovations being done in the downtown area. Of course, the poor person in the last video surly did not have a good weekend. But it sure shows Island spirit as the masses attempt to save his vehicle from the rising tides.
I know on this board there have been a few past critics of CB . But I hope they will give the island another look as the CB of today is much improved from recent years. The future is bright for our island!

My family and I moved to Carolina Beach three months ago and we absolutely LOVE it. It is a great area for young families. Memorial day weekend was a blast....fireworks, carnival rides, and the free movie at the Lake Park was great.

I have many fond memories of CB and Wrightsville Beach. When we would visit, my grandma would take us to the CB amusement park and let us ride almost all day. We used to take at least two days to visit WV, one day for swimmng, and the other on the pier fishing. When the hurricane that took the WV pier out hit, my sister and I were on the phone talking and watching one of our best childhood memories blow away.
Another question: we had lots of family who owned farms in Burgaw, along the river. Is it still country, or has it been developed?

I'll be in the area (along with dh, kids, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews) in late June and early July. We'll be staying in a house in Kure Beach. I look forward to seeing the changes that have been made.
By the way, I check out your blog every time you post a new entry. I have you in my blogroll.

Great to hear Niki, I appreciate the support! The boardwalk looks great but it is still a work in progress, there is much more to come.
LHF, I haven't been thru Burgaw in some time but it appeared fairly rural to me. Hopefully someone else with much better knowledge can give you an answer.

burgaw is very rural. there is like a little town square, but that's really it. outside of that, you will find older homes, double wide type homes, and vacant land. the blueberry festival can be fun though.

Thanks!! I'm trying to talk my hubby into making a trip down there. I'd love to see if the house my great aunt and uncle lived in is still standing. I remember it had a wrap around porch and it was along the river. Don't know exactly where, but I'd remember it if I see it. My grandparents lived on Queens, Third St. and Grandma moved into public housing on Nesbitt Ct. after my grandpa died. If you looked thru the periscope on the USS NC, you could see their house on Third. I'm sure those houses are probably gone. I remember hearing something about the public housing being torn down.
