Some of those guys have been around since 94-95. Sound like the fish place at the end of the main drag may have gone under, liked that one, as well as the fish place out 211 either before or after Wallly. Old age aint fun.

Anyway, I never thought the Pharmacy would last, glad it has. But the Provision Company (beer and shrimp) be my favorite, possibly all time!

It takes us about 30 min. to get to Wilmington, although coming from Raleigh, I have no desire to go to Wilmington! When we get bored, yes, that does happen from time to time, it takes us about 35 min. to get to Myrtle Beach and there is plenty of shopping there!!!

Have you ever driven to Myrtle Beach from Southport? I used to live in Shallotte and it took me 30 minutes to drive to Southport from there. It is about 59 miles to Myrtle Beach from Southport, the speed limit in NC is 55, how fast do you drive to get there in 35 minutes, not counting all the traffic lights?
It did not take us 60 min. to get to Cherry Grove from Southport. I did not write down the speed limit. I had no idea that anyone would ask that. I'll try to keep better track!!!

Default Southport to MB

If you take the Hickman shortcut to rt 9 to rt 31 (speed limit 60 actual speed more like 70) to 501 you can be in MB in 35-40 min from St. James. Rt 211 speed limit is optional (no enforcement). It all depends.

Now I know why there are so many wrecks on 211, are the police aware of this "no speed limit" and here I am doing 55, silly me

Speed limit is 65 on 31, there is no way to get to the 501 in that time even taking the Hickman shortcut, its 45-50 minutes from Shallotte to 501

Welcome to North Carolina! The Hickman shortcut is the right turn off after Brunswick Plantation onto Hickman Rd. Its a winding back road that takes you down to Rt. 9, where you take a left at the traffic light and about a mile down on the right is the ramp onto Rt. 31 which will take you to the Bass Outlet and a lot of other shopping outlets, at the first exit, or you can go on down to The Grissom Parkway exit and this will take you to the Planet Hollywood, Broadway at the beach, Mall area and its a good way to get to the MB airport. By taking this route you are avoiding all the traffic lights in Calabash, Little River and North Myrtle Beach on 17.
Enjoy the ride!
And if you know anyone who would like to live at Rivers Edge Plantation in Shallotte, I have a great house to sell!

I've been to Ocean Ridge and St James and I'll be visiting Rivers Edge in Aug (along with Winding River). Tell me about your house for sale in Rivers Edge. Why are you selling?

Hi there, thanks for asking. We built our custom home in 2006 hoping it would be our last move. Due to personal reasons we have to sell it. My husbands early retirement which he was to receive that year, was put on hold and he is back working in MA, our son goes to school in Wilmington, and our daughter will graduate her P.A. program next year and is going to intern in Wilmington. We love RE it is a new and growing community, and a lot of northern transplants live there. It has a brand new amenities center, with indoor and outdoor pools, sauna, hot tub, a fully equipped gym, library and meeting hall. The residents also have a new beach house on Holden Beach, which is another great asset for the community. You can enjoy bike riding around a first class golf course, designed by Arnold Palmer, and have a drink and a meal at the club house after a good days golf. If you would like to see details look on Realtor.com our MLS number is 635261.
If you need any more information about the area I'll try and help you with it.
Thanks again.

I looked up your listing and the place looks great. Did you look at any of the other communities that I mentioned? I'm only looking at the communities with beach clubs. So far, each community (Ocean Ridge, St James) had something going for it but we still want to look at the other options. We're about 2-3 years away from retiring. We won't be snow birds. We'll be full time residents. Enjoying golf, the beach and socializing. Our contact says that Reivers Edge has the best Beach Club. Can't wait to see it!!

Hi there,
When we first looked at Rivers Edge we also looked at Brunswick Plantation, Seascape and Magnolia Greens. We did drive through and look at some homes in Ocean Ridge, its a very large, busy community and we thought there was too much traffic from all the people coming in to use the golf courses, we enjoy walking and riding our bikes and didn't think the roadways would be safe enough.
St. James is even bigger, in fact it is an incorporated town now, it was too confusing to get around and overbuilt. We didn't go to Winding River, and we were put off by the only road in and out of these communities being Rt. 211, it is a 2 lane road and people drive at 65 mph + they risk life and limb to overtake you going into oncoming traffic just to get in front of you!
Rivers Edge is a fairly new community, which is why we chose it, and naturally it has a "younger " population than the communities that have been there for 10-15 years.
It is centrally located, only 2 miles to Rt 17, 30 minutes to the Myrtle Beach outlets for shopping and dining, and about 35 minutes to Wilmington. Shallotte is a small town, but it has all the basics you need, 3 grocery stores, Home Depot, Lowes, Belk, Ashley Furniture, 3 drug stores, a new movie theatre, bowling alley and local restaurants.
The OIB beach is about 6 or 7 miles away and easy to get to, Holden Beach where the club house is takes about 15 minutes to get to, but when you see the beach its worth it. Hope you enjoy your visit to the area, and don't forget to go to The Purple Onion for lunch on Main St, its very good! And a visit to the area must include a trip to Holden Brothers market, they have the best fruit and vegetables, and most are grown right there on the farms.
