I'm looking for people's personal experience with school systems in any of the following counties. New Hanover, Carteret or Dare. Is one rated better than the other? I have a 2 year old so ideally I'd like to start her in one school system and stay there after Kindergarten. Private/Parochial school is also something I'd seriously consider just because those are the kind of schools I attended.

Thanks for the help!

While not the same as personal experience, this should give you a start. Be sure to look at all the tabs under a system. Not a real intuitive site.

I don't know what you're looking for exactly, but I doubt Dare County would have much to offer. Other than small classes that is. If I decided to someday move to and stay in Wilmington, I'd want to send my future children to Cape Fear Academy. From what I've read it sounds the most promising. It goes from PK-12, so there isn't a big change.

Our grandkids go to White Oak Elementary in Cape Carteret, and the kids and parents are very happy with the school. And the high school is beautiful and relatively new, I think? The little one went to preschool at the Baptist church and that seemed to be a good experience also...

Smile Carteret Schools have a good reputation

We have friends who moved here from Goldsboro. They have two daughters who were in private school there. After talking to teachers and other parents, they put their daughters in White Oak Elementary and Broad Creek Middle. They just finished their first year. Both the girls and the parents were exceptionally pleased.

I also interview students for one of the Ivy League colleges so I get to spend time with students from a number of area high schools. I have been very impressed with students from Croatan High School which recently won an award as one of the top schools in the US.

The above post references Broad Creek Middle School. By reviewing their 2007 - 2008 End of Grade Scores, you can see why people are pleased with that school. In the 8th grade, at least, the school is 18 points higher than the state average in Math, and 16 points higher in reading. These percentages are of the total students making a level 3 or level 4 on the end of grade tests (that is passing)

2007-2008 NC Standardized End of Grade Tests (8th Grade)

Broad Creek Middle District State

Math 86.2 78.0 68.2
Reading 70.9 66.6 54.2
