I cant believe all the comments about New Bern. I have lived in New Bern/Jones County since 1976. I remember before the mall and Walmart was built. New Bern is growing like any other town but kept alot of the historical charm downtown.

If you want to live in a friendly, crime free, good school district, there might be a "compound" you can join. Just wear the same clothes as all other people and women dont need to cut their hair. LOL

Crime is in every town, not avoidable. There are undesirable neighbors, just like all other towns. There are taxes, just like all other towns. And you also have very negative people that cant find anything good in life, just like any other town.

What New Bern has is diversity. You have young and old. Now for entertainment, there is a lack of nightlife. If nightlife is what you crave then New Bern is not for you. But to get that ammenity, you also pick up an area of more crime and higher taxes. What do you consider more important?

My husband and I will be moving to the mountains due to job transfer. I live in Jones County which is as "Mayberry" as you can get. So if you dont mind a 30 minute travel to one of three towns and a very laid back atmosphere then maybe living on the outskirts of New Bern might be what you are looking for. Pamlico County isnt too bad. Both have lower taxes than Craven County.

Just base your opinion on what is important to you, not by what anyone might say about the town you chose.

I lived in New Bern for nearly 20 years. There is very little crime there. I never had one problem. Neither did anyone in my faimily. We always left our doors unlocked. The only bad areas are craven Terrace, Trent Court, and Duffiefield. But we stayed away from those areas. I also used to walk downtown late at night. My friend lived near the tryon palace...which, now that I think about it...is right near Trent Court. We never had problems with anybody. We used to walk to bars and stuff. Also, a lot of the crime is happening in Havelock. This is added to the Craven County stats.

I would move back to New Bern anyday. I like it here in Wilson too though.

Default Moving to New Bern !!

Hi I'm a disabled vet and want to know do they have any veteran organizations in town and are there any jobs for vets? I have teenage daughters that are in high school, I see that you have one high school in town. How are the teachers, and will my kids get a quality education. Also, I'm a minor league football coach, I'm considering moving my team to New Bern are there any football players there?

I went to New Bern high school. In my opinion, it's a pretty good school.

also, New Bern high has one of the best football teams in the state.

seeing as how you have Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point right down the road, there are alot of vet jobs. Cherry Point is the biggest civilian employer east of I-95. there are also VFWs, FRAs, and American legions. As well as Masons and Shriners, though the latter aren't vet organiztions.

Default Live Music

There were several discussions asking about the wonderful nightlife in New Bern (yes I'm joking). My wife and I were down last weekend and found that the Sheraton (now a Hilton property) has really great live music on their deck on the weekends. We went Sunday night and listened to Bob Tyson and his quartet play some light jazz and standards. Its the best night life we have found so far.

Nicholas Sparks does not strickly write about New Bern, he has a book called Dear John which is based on the cape fear/Wilmington area, Nicholas Sparks lives in New Bern, his kids attend Ephiphiny (spelling ?) school which is a private christian school. We have a mutual friend so I know this information to be accurate.

I visit New Bern several times a year as my mom and her extended family all live there. Honestly I hate the place, there is almost nothing to do there. If you own a boat your better off than most people. This has to be the most boring town I have ever stayed in. If you want anytime of night life you have to drive towards Cherry Point or Morehead City. I have seen dry counties with more night life than New Bern. Another factor is the high cost of homes compared with other areas of North Carolina. You locals can hate me for saying this but it is my honest opinion.

What do people mean by "nightlife" anyway? What do people do that they consider "not boring"? As for me, if I feel like going out I rather enjoy heading to my local watering hole for good conversation over a couple of brews. Sometimes there is live music playing at different venues. There are a couple of good restaurants that I enjoy. Maybe I'm too old but this pretty much satisfies my need to evening entertainment.

I think that people who move here appreciate it's quieter atmosphere. If what you are looking for in a hometown is lots of nightclubs and things, then yeah, you wouldn't want to move here. But there are lots of folks who don't need such "entertainment". So we like what we have.

It has been my experience that in most small, at least southern towns, that most entertaining is done in the homes of friends. What you need to do is get involved in something..church, volunteer, civic organizations, meet people.

You need to be on the "A list." Then you will have all the night life you want.

But you don't get there sitting at home, sulking.
