We want to go to the beach this Friday and were thinking of Wrightesville...but then heard there was a surfing competition there Fri, Sat & Sun. Thinking it may be too crowded??

Second thought was Carolina Beach? Never been to either one, so any guidance is greatly appreciated. It'd be two adults and two teens. We're looking to hang out at a nice beach and eat a good meal and then head back to the Raleigh area the same evening or night...

Any thoughts?

I don't think you can go wrong heading to Wrightsville and then dining at the Oceanic (ocean view on the beach - good seafood) or Dockside (harbor view - great burgers and laid back atmosphere). I'm sure others will suggest some of my favorites, but I have never been disappointed at either of these.

I live a block away from the Oceanic, and I won't eat there anymore. Budget food on par with Red Lobster, a really bush league effort on their part.

People talk it up, I don't know why, I guess it was really good 3, 4, 5 years ago.

Dockside and Bluewater Grill have good food, and views of the Intracoastal. The real place to eat around here is Sweet and Savory. No view, not much atmosphere, but it is inexpensive, and the food is top notch.

To the OP:
I haven't heard of a surfing competition here, but I don't really keep up. Fridays at Wrightsville aren't nearly as crowded as Saturdays are. Saturday you need to get here before 10AM to find parking.

I don't like it.

I moved to Wrightsville Beach for the specific purpose of having an alternative to driving to Carolina Beach.
