After driving 600-plus miles, we found our campground looked exactly like a sandy parking lot and was next door to a waterslide that played loud rock all day and half the night.
It was very windy and super-hot. As we set up the tent, the "sandstorm" stung our eyes and skin. All around us were tents and cars.
We finally got our tent up, and we looked more closely at the cars. EVERY ONE of them had people in them, and they were watching us.
I thought, "THIS is our vacation? Such fun -- sitting in a hot car and watching someone put up a tent in a sandstorm!"
Lesson learned: Research campground before making reservations.
We had friends who always camped at Frisco; they were very happy.
After that experience, we rented beach houses or condos.
I think camping at Okracoke in October will be lovely. Remember sunscreen as well as the bug spray.
Yeah. Even worse at Assateague where the wild horses come and eat up all your food when you sleep or are away. Ah the joy of sitting in the sun with your wind blown, bug eaten skin. I love it!! Truly I do, but being prepared is essential.
I will say more later and try to post some picks. Let's just say, I came, I saw, never will I camp on a beach again. Motel, hotel, any kind of inn, but, no tent, camper nor rv on a beach, shall I rest my head in on.
Other than that, for now, it was worth trying for one night, my last night was spent at Blackbeards Inn.
The wind and mostly the flying biting critters. Friday night, was find, but once I walked to the showers the next morning, I must have gotten bit on 80 percent of my body.
I enjoyed the trip, but I just don't plan to ever again sleep at the beach. Not enough deet on this planet to make me venture out to a beach campsite for any reason. Just thinking about it and now I'm itching and scratching again.
The sunsets and rises were beautiful, listening to sound of the ocean, was glorious. I had a wonderful time walking the beach, getting my feet wet and legs soaked up to my hips.
Oh and the island was quite busy this weekend, lots of people visiting Ocracoke this weekend. The lighthouse on Hatters was lovely and to experience a walk through the lighthouse museam, was something really special. Overall the trip was wonderful, except when you get a bit too much spirits into some and they almost come to blows. Some people never grow up.
