Anyone on here ever live in Manteo? If so, did you like it?

I went to trade school with a guy who lived there and he liked it, not loved it. I've been there and it's a nice area. Many fun things to do, just gotta be prepared for those hurricanes.

Apparently Andy Griffith lives in or just outside of Manteo.

I'm thinking of moving to Manteo from New York. Any suggestions. I am 60 y.o. and love the ocean.
Thanks
Marcia

Its beautiful, and very secluded, which can be a wonderful way to live. I don't live there, but I would want to know about medical practices etc. And if that is reasonable available I would be there. It would be a very special way of life.

It is a nice place. A LOT of things to do. You could probably go a few months and see something different (beaches, museums, etc). The hospital out there is very new (early 2000s). It is jointly owned by a hospital in VA and Pitt County Memorial Hospital, which is a HUGE hospital in Greenville affiliated with the medical school at East Carolina. So medically, you would be fine. Not sure about the private practices. I assume they would be alright, since doctors love to live at the beach.

But, it is kinda on an island (no pun intended). It is a process to get there from the west and north. The largest nearest city is VA Beach, and that isn't fun to drive. The traffic/people go from one extreme in the summer to the other in the winter.

The handful of doctors on Roanoke Island are mediocre at best (and one is especially terrible). If you need anything beyond a checkup you have a day trip in store to a handful of specialists on the beach or more likely up to Chesapeake or Norfolk.

Like many if not most places, I suspect Manteo is a LOT better to visit than to live there. You need to think this through very carefully.
