Hi! I've been here for a while now, gotten settled and am now FINALLY ready to open a new bank account here in Wilmington. Does anyone have any suggestions for a good and reliable local bank? I had trouble with my local bank in PA (not very reliable), so any information would be appreciated! Thanks!

I would stay away from the local banks, they are too over extended. Try BB&T, they are somewhat local but have a broader presence in the country.

The biggest local banks, Cooperative Bank and Cape Fear Bank, went bankrupt due to bad bets on real estate. Bought by First Bank and First Federal Bank, which are local banks in other areas.

I would second BB&T. It is a good regional bank. I use Wachovia and Bank of America, which were once true North Carolina banks, but I can't recommend them today.

Thanks for the quick responses!! I will definitely look into BB&T. I have had my own troubles with Wachovia, so I second your opinion there...
Does anyone have an opinion on Carolina First Bank? Thanks so much!

it depends on what is important to you. Carolina First is an upstate South Carolina bank. They don't have much in North Carolina outside of the mountains of western NC. Online banking is a big deal to me, and theirs looks embarassingly bad.
