Hi,
My husband and I are relocating to Eastern NC. We are potentially going to end up near Washington, NC due to a job. Is this a nice, happy, friendly, and safe area to live? Are there towns you recommend? We like to be near 'stuff' (maybe 5 miles from stores, etc.), don't want to be in the middle of nowhere, but want to live in a relatively quiet place. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

There is Cypress Landing in Chocowinity....Nice development....I was there a few times...you really need to visit, what I consider an unsafe neighborhood, may seem nice to you...just visit and drive....opinions from others is a start, but your opinion is the only one that matters...

Washington seems to have a fair amount of racial problems... There is a real neat historic area along the riverfront but it's a stones throw from the ghetto neighborhood.

So you'd pretty much like to have your cake and eat it too eh?

I'm going to presume that you're moving from somewhere up North?

If you're looking for friendly I'd suggest moving to a place with a few more Yankees. Outwardly the people of this area appear to be friendly but once they find out that you're not kin to anybody local it's almost like you have the plague.

Washington is very Old South. Most of the people there tend to keep to themselves unless you're an active member of their church.

Shopping is very limited there too. They have one medium sized shopping center there but it's seen better days and is not 100% full.

The waterfront is nice with a very long river front boardwalk and some quaint shops.

Washington Park abutts Washington and is probably one of the nicest places to live there.

Greenville is a 20 minute ride from Washington and has tons of shopping along with some very nice neighborhoods. Stay out of the Hood in Greenville and you'll have no problems.
