My wife and I are thinking about relocating to the New Bern,NC area and are trying to figure out where to live. When I look at the crime rate in the cities around New Bern I am very worried about the high rate of crime compared to the national average. Can anyone out there give me some ideas on where to settle down in that area? Also have 2 chlidren (young) and very concered on a good school district. Can anyone help me. We are from Michigan and it's very hard from up here to figure things out. Thank you very much.

From my experience over the past 46 years of living in the Eastern, Piedmont and Western divisions of the state, crime is a non-issue in small town, NC. New Bern is fine. Most crime is in the poor urban areas of cities like Charlotte, Raleigh, Greensboro, and Durham.

Another very nice place near New Bern is Oriental, which is known as the "Sailing Capital Of North Carolina." It is a small village of about 900 where sailboats outnumber residents 3 to 1.
