Saturday, May 1, 2010. 36th Annual Wooden Boat Show. Beaufort, NC. North Carolina Maritime Museum - Homepage

The largest gathering of wooden watercraft in the Southeast. This fascinating event takes place the first Saturday in May. This is not a commercial show. Instead it is a full day of scheduled demonstrations, talks and races that attract people who share an interest in the art, craftsmanship and history of wooden boats. Enthusiasts race radio-controlled boats in the pool on the Maritime Museum patio, and the public is given an opportunity to sail in traditional North Carolina boats. The show also offers music, a naval re-enactors encampment and a shipwreck exhibit. Admission is free

The New Bern 300th Committee’s “Remembering the War” this week spans four days, Thursday through May 9, and covers aspects of the battle and its aftermath.

The feature event will be the most ambitious local Civil War re-enactment ever — a naval and artillery battle at Union Point Park on Saturday featuring more than 200 re-enactors.

The four days include a variety of activities aside from the battle.

♦ The U.S. Colored Troops Symposium lecture featuring Hari Jones at Tryon Palace Auditorium at 7 p.m. Thursday

♦ Artillery demonstration, Friday at 7 p.m. at Union Point Park

♦ Civil War surgical and yellow fever medical procedure demonstrations at the Jones House at Tryon Palace on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

♦ Torpedo display and demonstrations, Rains House property, Friday

♦ The United States Colored Troops National Symposium, New Bern Riverfront Convention Center on Friday and Saturday

♦ Two performances by the nationally acclaimed Federal City Brass Band on Saturday, following each battle

♦ Infantry drills, Saturday at 8 a.m.

♦ Tours of the New Bern Civil War Battlefield, James City slave quarters and cemetery, Attmore-Oliver House and its Civil War Room, and New Bern Academy Civil War Room, Friday and designated hours Saturday

♦ Living history encampments at Union Point Park, the New Bern Riverfront Convention Center, New Bern Academy, and the New Bern Civil War Battlefield Park

♦ Self-guided Civil War Walking Tour of New Bern

All “Remembering the War” events are free.
