Atlantic Beach Area? (Charlotte, Wilmington, Elizabeth City: to live in, price, mall)

I want to move from Redondo Beach CA to a coastal town with a nice downtown for my family of 5 including kids, 3, 5 &7. Any suggestions? Basically, I want the town I live to be relocated someplace on the east coast without the $1 million pricetag on a 1400 sq ft home!No one here talks about Atlantic Beach or Morehead City. Are they retiree communities? too slow paced HELP!

I was there last year. It's ok but nothing to brag about. My brother and sister in-law relocated there about 9 years ago from Weehauken NJ. They love it and think it's absolute paradse. I think it's ok for a weekend but I'd get bored, plus where would I work they have no corporate? Then they told me the closet mall was like an hour and a half or something. They were begging us to move there and are mad because we are headed to Charlotte.
I've been to Atlantic Beach and Morehead City. Personally, I didn't really care for the area. Too built up for my taste. I prefer Southport, Topsail Island, Elizabeth City, Beaufort. Ocracoke Island is beautiful, but I've yet to make it there for a visit.
Just about every place along the NC and pretty much the SC coast are going to be slow paced, especially compared to California. Most of the beach towns are small and don't really have downtowns per se, at least not on the scale that you might be thinking. The largest city along the NC coast would be Wilmington. SC would be Charleston. If you are looking for areas on the coast that would have more of a city feel and a little faster pace, then those two would be my choices.
Gee, I used to live in LA and the only thing that Redondo Beach has in common with the NC coast is an ocean & salt water! I'd say you really need to visit the NC coast off-season to get a taste of what the place is like.
It's not citylife at all [or even major metro areas], it's a resort area. ONe day that'll change as Hwy 17 is extended--but you better give it 50 years!
