Hi, I'm originally from NC (Charlotte), but have spent the past 9 years in Vermont with my husband and 3 kids (ages 7 1/2, 5 and 14 months). We are relocating back to NC and since my husband has his own internet based company, we can live anywhere. We want to live in a small coastal town since we are leaving behind the charm of living in a small VT town. What are the best ones for raising a family with good schools? We were thinking possibly Kitty Hawk. It looks like schools there are good and real estate is in our price range.

The thing about the outer banks in general is that it's pretty isolated. Nothing is close there. I'd reccomend carteret county or east Craven County (Havelock).

There are two nationally ranked High Schools.
Croatan High School: Best High Schools - USNews.com
Croatan High School
Croatan High School - Newport, North Carolina - NC - School overview

Havelock High School: Best High Schools - USNews.com
Havelock High School - Home of the Rams (http://www.craven.k12.nc.us/HHS/ - broken link)
Havelock High School - Havelock, North Carolina - NC - School overview

Awesome elementary and middle schools as well.
Havelock:
Arthur W Edwards Elementary - Havelock, North Carolina - NC - School overview
Tucker Creek Middle School - Havelock, North Carolina - NC - School overview

Carteret:
White Oak Elementary School - Cape Carteret, North Carolina - NC - School overview
Broad Creek Middle School - Newport, North Carolina - NC - School overview

Tucker Creek Middle had a 91.5% pass on 1st attempt 8th grade math EOG. Compare that anywhere!

What's your budget? One area to guarantee your kids will go to schools Elementary through High is Tucker Creek, Carolina Pines, and Westbrooke or anywhere on the west end of Havelock really. Places like carolina Pines and Stately pines have new bern addresses but are really part of Havelock.

For elementary schools you have:
W Jesse Gurganus Elementary - Havelock, North Carolina - NC - School overview
W. J. Gurganus Elementary School

Arthur W Edwards Elementary - Havelock, North Carolina - NC - School overview
aweindex.html

For Middle you have:
Tucker Creek Middle School - Havelock, North Carolina - NC - School overview
Tucker Creek Middle School

For high you have:
Havelock High School - Havelock, North Carolina - NC - School overview

All of these schools are rated 9 out of 10 by greatschools based on their performance on standardized tests.
================================================== =====

As far as the community Havelock has an active parks and rec department, with everything from t-ball to LaCrosse.
Parks & Recreation Department - Havelock, North Carolina
Havelock Recreation Programs & Leagues

Schools have alot of activities as well. For instance, i was vacationing in Busch Gardens for my duaghters birthday this past April and Tucker Creek (as wellas HJ MacDOnald, from New Bern) were there competing in the Busch Gardens Music in the Park Band competition.
================================================== ========

I don't know enough about the specifics of Carteret to know specifically what neighborhoods go o what schools, and what elementary feeds into what middle, feed into what high. There are acouple of Carteret county really estate agents who post here often who can help you out.
================================================== ============
Here is a link Tucker Creeks HOA page. It is a voluntary HOA, so don't worry about HOA fees if it's not your thing should you choose to live there.

The areas are include are the ones I know for sure go to the above schools. Others, like wolf creek, I think might as well but am not 100%.

Some other neighborhoods you might want to look into are Indian Hills, Greenfield Heights, and Macdonald Downs. You can do an MLS search by neighborhood/subdivision.

Honestly, you can live just about anywhere in Carteret and Craven counties and be alright. The schools I mentioned are the best, but there are others that are on par or very good in their own right. There really isn't a school that your child wouldn't have the potential to excel. Even the lowest performing schools are a more a result of what goes in those students homes, not what goes on in the classroom.

I am a real estate agent that lives just a few minutes from Cape Carteret. We looked long and hard for nearly four years before we picked our home in Carteret County. Ther were a number of good reasons.

One of the things that you might want to consider is that Croatan High School has been named one of the best high schools in the country for two years running. I also know some folks who have been very pleased with Broad Creek Middle School. I interview potential college students for an Ivy League school, and I have been impressed with the candidates I have met from Croatan.

There are several neighborhoods that are very nice in the Cape Carteret area. It just depends on your budget and what amenities that you want. We live in Bluewater Cove which is seven or eight minutes from Cape Carteret. We are out on the White Oak River which we really enjoy. It allows us access to Bogue Sound, Bogue Inlet and the ocean. Our community has a boat ramp, nice board walk with day dock, swimming pool, club house, and very quiet streets. Homes there go from $300K up. There are 42 homes in the community and a number of children.

Across the street you can find homes from around $220K and up. No pool and no water access. There are lots of kids. The ice cream truck even still shows up.

Silver Creek Plantation is also a nice neighborhood on the White Oak River, they have quiet street, boat ramp, and day dock. There are homes there from the lower two hundreds and up.

A lot depends on what neighborhood feels like home to you. Some have lots of pine trees, others are more open with a few pines and oaks. Bluewater Cove has homes that are architecturally similar. Some neighborhoods are more mixed. Star Hill has a golf course and has some old homes, but there are new homes in North Star Hill but few trees. Some homes do back up on the National Forest there.

If you live in Cape Carteret, for $50 a year you get access to the boat ramp. As a resident you have access to a number of Cape Carteret parks. Cape Carteret itself is mostly an older neighborhood but there are some newer parts.

Figuring out which neighborhood feels like home is something you have to do live and in person. The average client that I take out has it narrowed down to neighborhoods in an hour or two.

It ends up being a matter matching your tastes and budget to what is available in the area. The choice of available properties in the areas serviced by Croatan High School is very wide.

You can check out a website, Crystal Coast Links, that I maintain with area pictures and an interactive map.

Everything is close to beach, good services, nice churches, and lots of friendly people. We love living in the area and have friends who moved two years ago. Their girls are both in Broad Creek Middle this year. They have had a great year. I have also heard good things about White Oak Elementary which is right in Cape Carteret.

Here is a virtual tour of some of the area that I did back in winter. It starts in Bluewater Cove, goes to Swansboro, then over to Emerald Isle, swings back to Cape Carteret and ends back up in Bluewater Cove at my home.

I also have a blog, Saltwater on my feet, which talks about living in the area.

I love to talk about the area so I am happy to answer any and all questions.

You can also find information about the area at Crystal Coast Living.

I have also found the Internet service that I get by cable modem in Bluewater Cove to be very reliable and fast. I do a lot of web work, and I am very pleased with the reliability.

I think you will find that it is true that the Crystal Coast is more than just a place to vacation.

Why would you ever want to leave Vermont?

I guess you have your reasons.

If you must move to NC..... The advice above is sound. I would stay away from New Bern. No problems, just all the (local) folks here are so prejudice against "Yankees" I think you would be better off in Havelock or Carteret County.

The Outer Banks is a fine place to be.The First Flight Schools are top notch and the quality of life is great! We have plenty of chain stores from a Starbucks Coffee to a Home Depot and many other businesses.I guess we are a bit isolated, compared to the Wilmington area,If you want big city life,Hampton Roads is just over an hour away.If you're looking tor small town living, filled with character and charm, you found it on the Outer Banks.Good luck!

Kitty Hawk is a great area to live ! Do not listen to the real estate agent from another area trying to b.s. you by saying we are isolated. Kitty Hawk is a wonderful place to raise a family. The schools cannot be beat by any other area in North Carolina. Check out Martins Point { Rumor has it Oprah is building there} Kitty Hawk Estates and Southern Shores.
