Jacksonville, NC is terrible. If you are looking for quality of life, J-Ville is not for you. The customer service is terrible, the workers are lazy, and there are no jobs. If you are a spouse, good luck finding a job on base. About 80% of the people working for MCCS are locals with no attachment to the military. Prospects off base are not much better. Of the spouses I have talked to the average wait for a job is about 1 year (on and off base). Even professionals have trouble finding employment here. The local population has a severe dislike for military personnel. Most of J-Ville's non-DoD population lives in poverty (due to lack of employment). Jacksonville depends solely on the military as its income. Even though the military spends money here, none of the money goes into infrastructure. The bases are the only thing keeping this God forsaken town on the map. If there was industry here aside from the military J-Ville would be a better place to live. Until the local government gets their heads out of their pockets, J-ville will just be a slum living in the shadow of its military bases.

Wow. As a California girl who isn't fond of Jville I am surprised to find I disagree.
Yes there is a portion of the community living in poverty, but isn't that true of most cities? As long as you are willing to work jobs can be had. Many military spouses find it hard to get employment because of limited availability. If you can work any hours then no problem! Jville has lowest unemployment rate in THE COUNTRY. That is no small thing.
Yes service stinks sometimes but that is due to no one caring enough to complain to the right people! Many of the things wrong with Jville are due to laziness on the non natives. I myself rather then complain uselessly make a point to ask for a manager or corporate # when I have issue at stores.
With the growth Jacksonville is slowly developing more into a varied economy. It still has no major employer other then the DOD however most don't see a problem with that.

I hate the weather and government here but as far as the people go... We live in Verona and our neighbors are the nicest people we have ever met.
