We've always had horrible luck at estate sales. Like you, I think the last one we went to, we picked up some records. Estate sales seem to be run by a company and they try and charge retail prices for things.

For the ones I've been to, no they don't. They just hire a company to handle the entire estate sale. The homeowner then just gets the money minus a certain percentage for the company. Keep in mind that a lot of estate sales happen due to a death in the family and the house along with the belongings are no longer needed.

Some estate sale companies are better than others at setting fair prices. Also, prices always get reduced the last day of the sale.

Last summer I bought an old 1920s/1950s Dodge truck tail light at an estate sale for $5.00 thinking it may fit my Dodge coupe. It didn't so I put it on eBay and sold it the first day for $100.

I watch out for cross stitch samplers. It saddens me that families are so happy to sell these (most times for very little) when so much work was put into them.

Exactly. I dont go to them in my area because the agencies here set the prices to near retail. Im better off just going to the antique mall and getting them CHEAPER than at the estate sales. For instance you can find a basic crystal decanter at the antique mall for 15 bucks, a garage sale for 5 bucks, or an estate sale for 30 bucks. That kind of thing. The only time Ive made out at an estate sale they were on the final day and marked everything down 90%. I got a set of crystal glasses and Iced tea pitcher for 10 bucks.
