table with metal decoration (stamp, collect, blankets, buy)

Hi, does anyone have any info on the table I've posted. It has a marble top but it was too heavy for me to put on it. There is decorative metal flowers and leaves? all around it, and the tips of the legs are metal too. It's about the height of a coffee table.
I've looked all around the net but can't even find anything remotely similar.
According to the guy I got it from.. he was in late 60's.. he said his father got from when he worked at the Barclay Hotel in NYC. Any info or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Your table is not an antique table. It was made sometime in the second half of the 20th century (after 1950). Its style is Neo-Classical French which was introduced around 1780. And if your table was from that period, the base would be made entirely of wood, and the metal decoration that your table has would have been hand-carved in the wood.
The stamped metal decoration that your table has tacked on is a cheap and easy way for a furniture company to decorate their wares.
thanks for the info. It actually makes me feel much better. I'd like to refinish it but I would felt awful redoing it if it was a valuable piece. Do you have any idea what type of wood they used in that time period? I was thinking maybe I'd strip it and stain it.
Irregardless, it will be lovely just put some good furniture oil on it....
I'll do that, but first it needs a thorough cleaning. There's chewing gum stuck under the table and the whole table has stains on it that are unidentifiable .
The table looks like it's made of a hardwood like oak. You can always take the base with you to the store to get an opinion from the help there when you go to buy the stain.
well, I found out that the ugly discolored metal around the table is solid brass. It shined up beautifully. I"m going to bring it in to see if someone can identify the wood. It's a nice looking reddish color and I think it would look nice just with plain urethane on it.
A lot of vintage furniture is going cheap these days because there is so much of it about, and the styles don't fit in with most people's house decor. If a piece of furniture doesn't have a good place in the home, then it just leads to clutter and a hodge podge looking interior space.

I paid a whopping 5 bucks for that table.
Don't touch that table untill you've done some research. Don't think of researching it as a chore; think of it as fun. Start with ebay. Search marble-topped tables. Beyond that you have the whole internet. Start looking for furniture books on amazon. Read the reviews carefully as they often contain gems of information.
Assuming that the top is good you absolutely stole it for five dollars. Take care of that top. If it's not on the table which is safest keep it on edge surrounded by blankets or other soft packing materials.
Ignore naysayers. It usually stems from jealousy. Do your own research.
I am no expert on furniture but I collect other items and have learned the proper course of action. Good luck.
