The ultimate lame answer when you have no answers on the football field. Last time I heard, the competition in question was football, not a geography bee.

They just saw that there was a team undefeated in 1950 and awarded the championship. Ask yourself this question, if they judged the championship in 1950 like they do today, do you believe OU would have been awarded the championship that year? My guess is no.

I think Texas is in the level with Ohio State, Nebraska, and Michigan. This is my tiers
Tier 1
ND
OU
ALA
USC

Tier 2
Texas
tOSU
Michigan
Nebraska

Tier 3
Penn State
Miami
Tennessee
LSU
Florida ( they are up here now)

FSU, Washington, and a couple others are lower.
The problem with your theory is that you might as well try to hammer a nail through a drop of mercury, because the college football landscape does indeed change over time. After all, Minnesota was a huge football power until the 60s, as was Navy and Army. Now, they're not even blips on the radar screen.

Notre Dame is an excellent example of that. They haven't mattered in two decades.

Based on the quality of the teams, right now the best is Texas/Oklahoma.

Overall your breakdown of Tiers is very good. The only amendment I would make is to have a Tier 4 for Penn St./Tennessee/LSU/Florida and put Miami/Texas/Michigan in Tier 3.

As for our discussion, I think it really comes down to if the Coaches' Title is really on the same level as the AP....I would assert it is not. The AP is the older and more traditional poll.

Also, as I have already alluded to, even though the titles were awarded before the bowl games, today we have the advantage of hindsight and clearly Nebraska had the best overall year in 1970 when compared to the Longhorns. In the same way, with the advantage of hindsight and looking at the overall SOS I think OU clearly had the best season in 1950...and hence, deservedly attained the AP championship.

Finally, even if the Longhorns do claim that 4th title (which it obviously has the right to do, but should also be able to deal with the arguments against the validity/value of the Coaches' Title), the gap is still somewhat large with OU's 7 titles to UT's 4.

Good discussion. Cheers.

A very heated rivalry! I have a friend who owns a music store in Salt Lake and is a Utah U. season ticket holder. He's told me some interesting stories about it.

Michigan v. Ohio State OF COURSE! No question.

I'm still a Michigan fan, even though I'm not applying to the UofM in 2012. :'(
