I'm a Panthers fan who has endured a miserable season. Now that we have the #1 pick officially everyone is talking about Andrew Luck if he comes out. I personally wouldn't pick a QB #1. But other Panthers fans think he's the answer.

Reasons to take Luck:

Recent success of 1st round QBs (Flacco, Freeman, Ryan, Sanchez)
New regime coming in who may not want to give Clausen a chance

Reasons not to take Luck:

Jimmy Clausen hasn't gotten a fair chance; Realtively inexpensive investment
Much bigger needs in the trenches and WR
Lack of a 2nd rd pick incentive to trade down if possible
Without a new wage scale for rookies way too big an investment at $50 million plus

Well, you will have to pay big dollars to a #1 overall regardless of if he is a QB or not. Not drafting a QB because you want to give Clausen the keys to the franchise seems to be a huge risk, and one he has not earned. The Panthers misery is not because of Jimmy alone, but he hasn't wow'ed anyone with the chances he has had.

If we have to pay big dollars to a #1 I would rather that be spent on a lineman on Offense or Defense since that is what is killing us and you win championships in the trenches.

Not many could wow with rookie receivers, a bad O-line, and the worst Offensive Coordinator in the history of football. Did I mention that Steve Smith's best days are behind him?

Personally, I'm glad my Bills passed on Clauson. He would have never survived in the AFC East. That being said, Luck is a good prospect for Carolina.

Just out of curiosity, is Cam Newton making himself draft eligible this year?

He's waiting to see how much Auburn offers him to come back.

If he does that he may wind up with a real chronically losing team like Washington or San Fransisco or Arizona. Say what you want about Carolina's 2010 season but I'll take two really bad seasons in 10 years instead of 5 or 6 pretty bad seasons like the Skins.

This alone is the biggest reason I can think of NOT to take Luck. Carolina needs players on both sides of the ball. If I can make a trade where I could get a first round AND a second and even a possible third or fourth round pick I'd do it in a minute. You'd literally be getting three players for the price of one and chances are the contracts of all three wouldn't be as big as the contract for the first overall pick in the draft which tends to be RIDICULOUSLY high.
