Shut down the program. Allow the players to transfer and be eligible immediately. Years down the road, they can start up their program again from scratch.

I agree, the NCAA should shut down the football program for a significant period of time. The Freeh report states very clearly that the top administrators at Penn State and head coach Paterno was involved in this thing.

Where did the guys go claiming that it was all some sinister conspiracy by rivals to take down Penn State?

To their credit, the current administration there is the one making these statements and admissions so really, the blanket defenders of Penn State have no defense.

-NCAA needs to pretty much hammer Penn State athletics so that they can remember what honor really is and that for a top academic institution, they have an obligation to their students, alumni, faculty and the community beyond what Bowl game they can qualify for.

-They should leave the Paterno statue up as a reminder of misplaced priorities. Seriously, let this sink in.....the FOOTBALL COACH was the most powerful man on the campus at one of the top schools in the country. The Penn State fans should have to look in embarassment at Paternos statue when their football team is allowed to play again in 3-5 years.

Except they should change it so that instead of his index finger being in the air, it should be the middle finger, as Pope Joe basically flipped the bird to Sandusky's victims.

Wow. We have a thread in the Politics forum with a guy in there still claiming Joe Pa is innocent and that it's a "media conspiracy".

Probably has a tatoo of Paterno on one butt cheek and Sandusky on the other.

It turns out that Joe Paterno wasn't the man I thought he was. I used to defend him, but no more. His statue should be removed, his awards and records revoked, and his name removed from the library at Penn State. Quite frankly, I fear for his soul right now. As for the rest of them, one of them is getting his, and the other three are about to get theirs. The sooner, the better.

With that said, those who are responsible for these crimes are all being punished right now, whether it's in the afterlife or in a court of law, and there is no sense in punishing anybody else. Instead of dismantling the football program, use it as a healing agent. Football can help communities heal. Witness the New Orleans Saints in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, or the Alabama Crimson Tide after Tuscaloosa got blasted by a violent tornado last year. Penn State has a new athletic director and head coach now, and they have the power to take the football program in a new, better direction and help the university and the community heal.

I agree with Gnutella----let the legal system handle this----keep the ncaa out of it.

A lot of our opinions on Joe Paterno and his image have been deflated and defiled. His image of what constituted the Penn State Way is stained forever-----and anybody else who is complicit in a cover up will be dealt with by the courts.

Penn State will be dealing with this mess for many years------there is now a new coach and AD-----unless the Ncaa can prove any illegal hush money or benefits changed hands for silence, let the courts deal with this.

IIRC, the NCAA could hammer them for "lack of institutional control", which covers the conduct of coaches and staff.
