It seems to me that something is missing here since I never saw a Slippery Rock thread. Before today.

So let the discussion begin:

If Slippery Rock loses the big game this Saturday vs. Velcro Stone, will it Slip in the BCS standings? Or will it keep its edge over Rodney-Dangerfield-I-get-no-respect Stanford, even if the weekend turns out to be totally ducky for them?

talk amongst yourselves (I'm verklempt.)

It's a school or college. In either case better a slippery rock than a slippery slope.

I think if Slippery Rock loses to Velcro Stone they will still be in the BCS standings if and only if they are able to beat Cookoo State and the University of the Moon. Those will be tough games though.

Back in the '70s the U. of Texas stadium announcer (Wally Pryor) started giving the Slippery Rock scores every home game - as an amusement apparently. It caught on and was a regular announcement for years.

One Saturday home game, the Slippery Rock cheerleaders were invited to Austin to visit & co-cheer with the UT squad (I guess SR college had an open date that weekend). On one of the Longhorns' open dates, the UT cheerleaders traveled to Pennsylvania to reciprocate.

Anyway, it was a bit of entertainment for both schools until the '80s when it kinda faded out - maybe because UT started sucking pretty bad in football.

My brother, a UT grad, has a green Slippery Rock T-shirt & cap that he wears for every Texas opening home game. He's kinda weird.

Slippery Rock plays Kutztown on Saturday for the PSAC Football Championship with the winner going to the Division II Playoffs.

Note: "Playoffs" refer to a series of games which determine which team has the best football teams. It does not involve computers, so called "experts" and the like. At the end of these events you KNOW who is the national championship.

Pennsylvania is kind of an odd state when it comes to its state universities and in turn college sports. The state has 14 state-owned schools which are all (well, except Cheyney, the historically black school among the 14 state-owned schools) intermediate in size. (Penn State, and for that matter Pittsburgh, Temple, and historically black school Lincoln University, are all state-related schools but are not state-owned.) Among those 14 state-owned schools there are Slippery Rock (named after the town where it is located), Indiana (ditto), and California (ditto). So yes, Pennsylvania has two towns (and universities) that have the same name as another U.S. state, and also has a town (and university) named Slippery Rock.
