I keep watching all these teams jump ship to different conferences, and teams want to join BCS contention conferences, and all this talk about there should be some sort of playoff system. I agree that there SHOULD be some way to have a playoff system, but I also understand the point some people make about it taking away from rivalry week, and the bowl games...

So, I think I've come up with a realignment model that would effectively still support the majority of the classic rivals, while allowing for the bowl games to still have meaning WHILE incorportating a new extra 2 weeks of Football for playoffs. But, I want to know if anyone else thinks this model would possibly work or if it still is full of problems like other models...

I call it "Super conferencing"

First, there are currently 6 BCS Conferences (But only 5 have an associated Bowl Game)

ACC - Orange Bowl
SEC - Sugar Bowl
Big 12 - Fiesta Bowl
Big 10 - Rose Bowl
Pac 12 (Pac 10) - Rose Bowl
Big East - No associated Bowl

Take those 6 conferences & add teams to those conferences, then divide them into 8 conferences. Take each of the 8 conferences & have them form alliances with another conference to form a "Super conference"

Meaning, ACC will purge it's numbers down to 10 teams, then form an alliace with another 10 team conference like Big East, and together they form the, I don't know, East Coast Conference (which will be the Super Conference). That "East Coast Conference" will have 2 sub conferences (The ACC & Big East). The Champion ship game for that East Coast (Super) Conference would be (1 of the 4 BCS Bowls) the Orange Bowl.

The winners of the 4 bowls will play 2 more weeks of football in a 2 week playoff. This is where the Rankings come into importance. Top ranked winner plays bottom ranked winner.

Then the last week is the BCS National Championship game. Really, it will only add 1 week/2 games.

Now, here are the conferences: (Names are of course just for the model sake. Can be called anything that will Brand well)

EAST COAST (Super) CONFERENCE

ACC (Sub Conference)---------------------- (10 teams)
Miami Hurricanes
Virginia Tech Hokies
Boston College Eagles
Maryland Terrapines
Virginia Cavaliers
North Carolina Tar Heels
Duke Blue Devils
NC State Wolfpack

2 best records play for ACC Championship. Winner goes to ORANGEBOWL

BIG EAST (Sub Conference)--------------------(10 teams)
Pittsburgh Panthers
Notre Dame Fighting Irish
Syracuse Orangemen
Rutgers Scarlet Knights
Louisville Cardinals
Cincinnati Bearcats
UCONN Huskies
South Florida Bulls
Villanova Wildcats

2 best records play for Big East Championship. Winner goes to ORANGEBOWL

SOUTHEASTERN (Super) CONFERENCE

SEC EAST (Sub Conference)---------------------- (10 teams)
Georgia Bulldogs
Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets
Florida Gators
Florida State Seminoles
South Carolina Gamecocks
Clemson Tigers
Kentucky Wildcats
West Virginia Mountaineers

2 best records play for SEC EAST Championship. Winner goes to SUGARBOWL

SEC WEST (Sub Conference)--------------------(10 teams)
Louisiana State Tigers
Texas A&M Aggies
Texas Christian Horned Frogs
Alabama Crimson Tide
Auburn Tigers
Tennessee Volunteers
Vanderbilt Commadores
Ole Miss Rebels
Mississippi State Bulldogs
Southern Methodist Mustangs (Supports TCU vs SMU rivalry)

2 best records play for SEC WEST Championship. Winner goes to SUGARBOWL

MIDWESTERN (Super) CONFERENCE

BIG 10 (Sub Conference)---------------------- (10 teams)
Ohio State Buckeyes
Michigan Wolverines
Penn State Nittany Lions
Michigan State Spartans
Wisconsin Badgers

Alabama-Birmingham Blazers*****???????******
New Mexico Lobos*****???????******

2 best records play for MIDWEST BIG 12 Championship. Winner goes to FIESTABOWL

***Note***Here's one BIG Major Problem... Separating PAC 12 from BIG 10 meaning they won't meet in Rose Bowl anymore, but instead BIG 10 will meet BIG 12 in Fiesta Bowl and PAC 12 will meet BIG 12 in Rose Bowl

WEST COAST (Super) CONFERENCE

SOUTHWEST BIG 12 (Sub Conference)---------------------- (10 teams)
Texas Longhorns
Oklahoma Sooners
Oklahoma State Cowboys
Texas Tech Red Raiders
Nebraska Cornhuskers
Boise State Broncos

2 best records play for SOUTHWEST BIG 12 Championship. Winner goes to ROSEBOWL

PAC 12 (Sub Conference)--------------------(10 teams)

UCLA Bruins
Stanford Cardinals
California Golden Bears
Oregon Ducks
Oregon State Beavers
Arizona State Sun Devils
Arizona Wildcats
Washington Huskies
Washington State Cougars

2 best records play for PAC 12 Championship. Winner goes to ROSEBOWL

12 game seasons
Last week is still rivalry week

Week 13 is still the championships between the 2 best records from all Conferences (aka Sub-Conferences).

Then comes the bowl games. Bowl games will be business as usual, by sponsor invitation, however the 4 BCS Bowls will serve as the automatic championship games for the 4 Superconferences:

Orangebowl - Miami, FL East Coast Superconference Championship Game: ACC Champion vs Big East Champion

Sugarbowl - New Orleans, LA Southern Superconference Championship Game: SEC East Champion vs SEC West Champion

Fiestabowl - Glendale, AZ Midwest Superconference Championship Game: BIG 10 vs BIG 12 (Midwest) Champion

Rosebowl - Pasadena, CA West Coast Superconference Championship Game: PAC 12 Champion vs BIG 12 (Southwest) Champion

Week 15 - BCS Playoff game. Seed winners of 4 BCS Bowls 1-4. Seed 4 vs 1 & Seed 3 vs 2. Games to be hosted in the venue picked by the home team determined by highest rank winner.

LAST WEEK/16 - BCS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME - New Orleans, LA

Teams marked with "*****???????******" can be added to conferencing for balance of powers.

Been saying this forever. Although I'm happy as a SEC team fan, it's not fair to teams like Boise. They need to have better schedules.

Not sure what logic you used in selecting the teams to promote from lesser conferences and FCS...promoting UAB and New Mexico but not say Houston, Southern Mississippi, Air Force, or San Diego State.

I would rather not see superconferences. With 120 FBS teams, we could have 15 8-team conferences (9 major, 6 minor). The 9 major conferences could have an 8-team playoff, with the bottom 2 ranked conference champions competing in a play-in game for the 8-seed. The 6 minor conferences could have an NFL-style playoff for their own champion, essentially creating another division within FBS.

If they weren't on there, they were just forgotten. No need to get defensive about it.

The point is to critique it and say what other teams could be in there. Houston may be a better fit. Not sure how I forgot them. Southern Miss, eh... Sure, why not? Seems like UAB & So. Miss can be interchangeable. Don't think Air Force fits the mold. If they should be there, Navy should be there 1st. San Diego just unfortunately wouldn't contend in that PAC conference to take any of those teams' place.

any chance you can draft up your model so I can see where certain teams fall under your 15/8 (9 major, 6 minor) model???

Sounds interesting, but I'd like to SEE it

Not getting defensive about anything, it's just that New Mexico and UAB are 2 of the worst teams in FBS, so I find it interesting that you include them. It is a valid point about San Diego State's region though.

The way Fresno State is playing these days, I think they should be demoted from where they currently are....

Oh HELL NO.

Weak schedule for LSU won't cut it. Doesn't matter if we're good or not.

I like the idea of super conferences. If there's one good thing about this realignment, it's that this might open the door for super-conferences, and open the door for a playoff system.

That would be the only good thing to come out of it. I still dislike the concept of superconferences.

5 of those 8 teams are ranked right now. 1 other was ranked earlier this season. Weak? I don't think so.

Compared to the SEC, that conference would be a joke and weak. Conference game against Houston and Baylor? HA
