Unfortunately, it's not a myth that Boise has ZERO margin for error due to playing a weak schedule.

Add in late season losses to lower ranked teams, and wave goodbye to the BCS. If you're going to lose, do it early.

BCS recognizes Boise St as #6.
- Weak overall sure but... Georgia finished 10-3 and played in the SEC Championship. Their losses are to Boise St, LSU (#1), and South Carolina (#9). These guys are not weak...
- Late season to lower teams? TCU was 4 games ago, was #26 that week, and it was by 1 point. The next week they hung it on 8-4 San Diego St at home. San Diego St isn't that bad of a team... TCU finished #16... bad loss like an Iowa St, I think not.

If you want to be considered for a BCS bowl, you can't lose that TCU game. They went through this last year with the Nevada loss, and shouldn't be surprised that they are getting left out of the big bowls again as a 1-loss team.

BSU was #5, and lost at home to #24 TCU.

Oklahoma State's loss to Iowa State was on the road, the day after the head coach of their women's basketball team, and an assistant were killed in a plane crash. They get a bit of slack if they weren't quite focused.

BSU gets fat every year on a weak conference schedule, that they try and boost by playing a fairly decent BCS opponent, and then a few teams from other 2nd-tier conferences. Wins over Toledo, Tulsa, and Fresno State aren't going to build a solid BCS resume.

I think that after that Fiesta Bowl performance in 2006, the case for Boise St has been made for all time. They had a ton of fans that night. Basically anyone who wasn't cheering for OU was for Boise St, and they were loud. And there's no reason to think they wouldn't do the same this time around. Heck, the Sugar Bowl had Hawaii of all teams a few years ago. They got mauled by Georgia, but so what?
You really think people in the middle of SEC country are going to cheer for a mid-major in Boise?? SEC always thumps their chest about strength of schedule week in-week out, they're not gonna be interested in watching Boise. VT has been in Boise's shoes before, a few times over the past decade even, getting passed over for lower ranked teams with more pull. It's how the bowl system works.

I feel bad for Boise and understand their frustration, but VT spent two decades of winning to get their program to where it is. They have more wins than any other team since 1995 in D1a football, which was the season of their first big time bowl - coincidentally it was the Sugar Bowl - Boise is going to need to keep winning to grow their "status/pull" abilities for the financial planners for bowl games, and I think they're working swiftly on getting that recognition.

If the bowls were purely about the body of work for the season, such as March Madness, then there would be a lot of reason for the uproar against VT going. But the bowls are about meeting the initial requirements for the BCS game criteria, and then it's allllll about $$$$$ after that.

Are there teams that are better than both VT and Michigan?? Sure, of course there are. But the Sugar Bowl and Nokia saw an opportunity to get two of the larger fan bases in the country into their bowl game that are both ranked high enough in the BCS- they're looking for a return on their investment for sponsoring the bowl.
