1. SEC
2. Big 12 (though I think they were deeper than the SEC this year. The SEC just had better top teams)
3. B1G
4. Pac 12
5. Big East
6. ACC (seriously people, this conference is pathetic. But basketball.....)

It depends on what you mean by ranking the conferences.

If you mean "Which conferences are strongest on average, including all teams from top to bottom?" it might be pretty close between SEC and Big 12. I think both conferences had 6 or 7 bowl teams, right? Big 12 actually had a higher winning percentage but that doesn't necessarily tell the story. SEC won the only head-to-head but that doesn't tell the whole story either.

If you mean "Which conferences are strongest at the top?" I'd say it's quite clearly the SEC.

If you wanted to compare the very best team from each conference, then that would be more interesting. I'd have it like this:

1. SEC - Alabama (would beat anybody)
2. Mountain West - Boise St.
3. Pac 12 - Oregon (would beat OSU)
4. Big 12 - OSU
5. "Big" - Wisconsin
6. Big East - West Virginia
7. ACC - Clemson

Just for giggles, here's how ESPN ranked them:

Rank Conference Score
1 SEC 96.5
2 Big 12 91.0
3 Pac-12 76.6
4 Big Ten 69.4
5 MWC 55.7
6 Big East 38.1
7 ACC 32.4
8 C-USA 30.5
9 MAC 16.1
10 Sun Belt 13.6
11 WAC 12.1

Funny this is, the MWC actually wound up better than the ACC and Big East (Boise State and TCU obviously had an impact here). Meanwhile, CUSA actually was just a couple of points below the ACC.

If these trends continue, it will be interesting to see how they can go without rejiggering the BCS formula--that is, if the BCS wants to have any shred of credibility at all.

4- Big 10
5- ACC
6- Mountain West
7- CUSA
8- Big East
9- Sun Belt
10-MAC
11-WAC

All this hate for the ACC and Big East... Wow.
Since 2000, ACC 21 - BigXII 19.
Since 2000, Big East 13 - BigXII 12.
