National Signing Day is just around the corner and programs are finalizing some commits, recruits are switching over, and some of us fans are eagerly awaiting the big day.

Oregon lands Arik Armstead today! This is a big commit for the Ducks. He'll be a DE, but he is considered the #1 OL recruit in the nation. However, we'll use him on defense...and basketball. Hopefully his buddy, Shaq Thompson commits too.

Texas got an awesome back in Daje Johnson from Pflugerville Hendrickson. I teach in Pflugerville and watch the Hawks all the time. The kid was waiting for that UT offer and switched from TCU to the Horns. This is an awesome pick up for them.

Good kid too.

I'll bet Texas makes a receiver out of him, as the Horns lost Thomas Johnson to A$M. (that's a rarity).

Kid is a fine athlete.

What kind of general attitude does he have? "Good" kid?

Ranking recruiting classes are stupid.... Boise has never had a top 50 class yet finishes in the top 10 annually.

Texas always has a top 5 class annually and finishes in the top 5 rarely.

go figure.

LMAO at your knowledge of Texas football.

Since Mack Brown's first top 5 ranked recruiting class at Texas (2001), Texas has wound up in the top 5 AP poll a total of 5 (that's FIVE) times, and was 6th once. Texas' had 6 top 5 ranked recruiting classes in that period according to Rivals.

AP Poll end of season rankings:

2001 - 5th
2002 - 6th
2003 - 12th
2004 - 5th
2005 - 1st
2006 - 13th
2007 - 10th
2008 - 4th
2009 - 2nd
2010 - ZERO (massive internal coaching staff schism caused 5-7 meltdown).
2011 - NR (8-5 rebuilding year with new staff).

Not too shabby, but hey....they (we) are on the way back to the BCS level in 2013.

But yes, ranking recruiting classes is REALLY stupid. Those "stars" don't mean much. Texas' 2007 class was a bust.

Lots of high school stars are guys that peaked physically at 17, or say matured faster. Plenty of guys that grow a few inches in college. Not just in width.

Yes, and some are just overrated to begin with.

Plus some get crappy coaching, as happened at Texas in the few years prior to 2011 and the new staff.

Yeah, I heard he may be a wr as Texas has that Aledo kid coming in (Grey). He's not super tall, but fast. Daje seemed always polite to me when I have spoken with him. But, then again I'm a teacher with many teacher friends at Hendrickson and in PISD. He has been known to be a bit cocky on the field, but so many kids are now. They can just run it out of him.

LSU got some really good recruits for their offensive line -- lots of height and lots of beef. I was hoping they'd go out and get some better recruits in the wide receiver position and also on the defensive line. Alabama's defensive line, on the other hand, just keeps getting scarier and scarier. But it looks like LSU's strategy is to go out and get some beef on the lines and beef in the backfield and simply out-smash the crimson tide. That's all well and good, but they also need some big physical receivers that Mettenberger or someone else can go to, guys who can just get open and keep the ball moving on third and long.

Did you have fun digging that info up?

You would quote the AP and not coaches as its to your benefit of course... but hey your right, thats not rare so give yourself a cupcake!

But those stars still dont mean much... what was Victor Cruz's stars? Aaron Rodgers? Jordy Nelson? Tom Brady?

and opposite of that

Melvin Alaeze
Willie Williams
Fred Rouse
Ryan Perrilloux
Mitch Mustain
Caleb King

All 5 star recruits coming out of high school... what did they do?

The stars dont mean anything in the grand scheme of things as there are too many variables in the success of those recruits.

If you read my whole post, you would see I agree with you about the "star" business.

Colt McCoy was just barely a three star coming out of Tuscola's Jim Ned High School.

But your characterization of Texas was incorrect.
