A day after flying from Gainesville to Fort Collins in a private jet to woo Jim McElwain, Jeremy Foley is on his way back to Florida apparently empty-handed. At issue - a $7.5 million buyout McElwain agreed to when he extended his contract over the summer. Florida reportedly attempted to get Colorado State to lower the buyout to an insulting $3 million, but they refused to budge off the original amount.

Now, being a CSU grad, I don't want a ticked-off, butthurt coach on the sidelines, but I also don't want a bunch of rich flatlanders thinking they can come in, crap on my school, and take our coach without having to pony up for him. They may still get their man, but I strongly hope they come back with a cashier's check for the full buyout amount.

It had been a fairly difficult few years until Jim McElwain came on to the scene at CSU. Sonny Lubick had a solid run with the program and IIRC he had been wooed by a Florida program around his 5th year or so.

I'm with bluescreen73 on this. If Florida really wants McElwain, they should pony up the coin.

And if THAT doesn't happen, there's always another university.

With the firing of Bo Pellini at the University of Nebraska, being the next coach of the Cornhuskers is a distinct possibility. And it's not that Nebraska hasn't enticed other coaches from CSU before as the Rams head basketball coach Tim Miles went to Lincoln.

Sonny actually got a call after year 2 (1994). Miami wanted him to succeed Dennis Erickson. He was considered for the USC job in either '97 or 2000, and the Oregon State job in 1998. In all those cases he either declined or took his name out of consideration. Wish McElwain had that kind of character, but I don't begrudge him for being interested in the Gators gig.

They can have Miles, but not Mac. If they want a Colorado coach they should check out Bob Stitt @ Mines, Troy Calhoun @ AFA, or John Wristen at CSU-Pueblo.

Incredible! Florida is humiliating themselves by nickle & diming CSU and McElwain! I thought these guys were an upper echelon organization (albeit with a currently middle to lower tier football program)?! They definitely need to get their act together and make a proper offer, or go away!

Dear Florida, please F this up, so that Nebraska can come in and take him. Thanks.

Yay, they got him. That's pretty clever as part of the deal was Colorado St. gets $2 million to come to the Swamp and play the Gatos in 2017. They had to spend that anyway so might as well get a good coach out of it.

The Rams pretty much got the whole buyout. $2 million payday game, $2 million of McElwain's salary, and $3 million from Florida. Good riddance. Wish him well, but the way Florida handled the courtship was pretty tacky. Had they waited until after the bowl game and come into town quietly and discreetly it probably would've cost them a LOT less.

I don't care much for Foley but to his credit word has it they landed in Missouri first, but it didn't throw the media off the trail. I just hope this new hire results in many McElwins.

What's this? Finally a decision after all of that awkward dithering?

Jim McElwain has allowed himself to be placed on that hot seat in Florida. Now he'll be facing intense scrutiny at the Swamp! That entire messy deal could've been done so much cleaner in my estimation. There seemed to be so much careless negotiating and uncertainty. But, here we are, so the very best to CSU going forward!
