Florida State University quarterback Jameis Winston was awarded the 79th Heisman Trophy on Saturday, an honor that comes amid lingering questions about a rape allegation that has cast a pall over his claim to the coveted bronze statue.

Winston, who was considered a frontrunner by many college analysts, led the top-ranked Seminoles as a freshman to an undefeated regular season and a chance to play for a national championship in January.

I didn't know he was a Freshman. If so then he is going to have a really promising career. Wouldnt be surprised if he left school early to go for the draft.

Is James Winston the first Heisman winner who felt the need to have a lawyer by his side when he did interviews prior to the awards ceremony ?

Is that where college football is headed ?

Parents have been bringing lawyers to parent/teacher conferences for decades.

Historically, the Heisman trophy winner was supposed to be the player who best embodied the spirit of the sport (combining athletic prowess with integrity) but that has gone by the wayside of late. Several recent recipients of the Heisman are of questionable character (Winston, Manziel, Newton) but you cannot deny the fact that they were the most dominant offensive players the year they won it. It's more of a MOP (Most Outstanding Player) award than anything nowadays. But to a lot of these kids, they realize their calling in life is to entertain millions of people on television each weekend with their mad skillz, what they do off the field is their business (unfortunately the minute they are a celebrity, any semblance of a private life has gone out the window).

This is the 3rd Florida State QB to win the Heisman in the last 20, or 21 years. Pretty impressive for the program.

It's too bad Charlie Ward made the foolish decision to play in the NBA instead of the NFL.

You left out Reggie Bush from your list of questionable characters.

That's because Bush no longer has a Heisman to show for it.

Winston's poise is just amazing. The dude never looks like he's breaking a sweat...he just stands in there and delivers it.

I think this guy is gonna be the first double Heisman since A.G.

Did you read the linked article? Most of it is about the rape allegations. The potential case against Winston was so weak that the authorities didn't think that even an arrest was justified. The woman in question is declining to pursue it as a civil case. Still, the article about Winston being the youngest Heisman winner ever, is mostly about the allegations. Little wonder he feels the need for an attorney.

College players aren't eligible to declare for the draft until following their 3rd year out of high school...he won't be able to leave early until next year.
