Jim Rome just reported that Chip Kelly has taken the job with the Philadelphia Eagles. Evidently they came back with a more attractive offer and he accepted it.
I hope he's willing to tweak his frenetic offensive scheme for the pros or we might be talking about him in the same sentence as Lou Holtz, Steve Spurrier, Nick Saban, and Dennis Erickson.
Oregon goes back to mediocrity. It was fun for those ducks fans while it lasted.
Chip might work at Philly since they still have Vick and all those speedy receivers. It will be interesting to see if it works with guys just as fast on defense

That's assuming a) Vick restructures his deal and b) he can actually play a complete season without getting injured.
As long as we have Uncle Phil, we'll be fine. Chip was a great coach, but man, when we lost Bellotti, everyone said we would be garbage. We lost Dixon, we eventually got Masoli, lost Masoli, we plugged in Thomas, lost Thomas, plugged in Mariota, lost Blount, plugged in James, and on and on. I think we will end up with Mark Helfrich as HC and the train will roll on next year. When kids see that Oregon won't skip a beat next year, Oregon will continue to be on recruits final lists. Besides, rumor has it that Helfrich was groomed to take over and this was the plan all along. Guess we will see.

Whats the ducks current vibe on a replacement? The OC? I think they would make a hard push at Petersen. Might be one of the only colleges that could lure him from BSU IMO.

He has been a fairly enigmatic coach. He's much less terse than Kelly and the players like him. The question is, does he have that natural eye for the offense. Will he be able to take the Kelly offense and tweak it and improve it. Kelly's offense was always a work in progress. Will Helfrich be able to do that, or will it become stagnant- that is the question IMO. If the staff stays mainly intact and we continue to win, everything else plays out.
We know this was going to hapen sooner rather than later. He had to try his hand in the NFL eventually. I think we'll be pretty confident if Helfrich is announced as HC, Scott Frost promoted to OC, and the rest of the staff stays (I think we could lose our DL coach). The Petersen ship might have sailed as he seems pretty happy in Boise. I know Patterson's name has sprang up. We'll see though.
We had a hell of a ride with Chip though. Sure was fun. Looking forward to see how we move forward.
Strangely enough, I think Chip Kelly is going to end up missing Eugene than Eugene will miss Kelly. That's not to say that Eugene won't miss Kelly - they will. But they'll live. Oregon's been on the football map for nearly two decades now; it's not like the program just got good under Kelly, though he certainly did take the game there to another level of excitement after Bellotti built the program. Even so, there are still things Kelly could have done to make the football program more successful; his defenses were only so-so. Maybe the next coach will keep enough of the offense and the offensive philosophy in tact and make it a bit more of a power team.
As far as the move from Kelly's perspective, I think every big name coach should try the NFL at least once, just to see what he can make of it. My gut feeling, though, is that he's going to end up more like Nick Saban than Jim Harbaugh. I think the problem a lot of college coaches have is that, despite knowing the game, they don't necessarily know the pro game. Saban himself said it: there's just too much parity and too much you can't control at that level. Kelly's not going to be playing Colorado and Cal; even the sorriest teams in the NFL are capable of pulling off a win once in a while. I could see Kelly going 10-6 a couple of times, but an injury here and there, and things could unravel fast.
I think it would be fascinating to see what ole Chipper could do with Michael Vick. I just wonder if Vickers is perhaps too old to do what coach Kelly wants him to try to do. But this could be the one thing that gets everyone on the Eagles roster reinvigorated and I get the feeling that's why Philly parted with Reid (a more 1980s/90s/West Coast/Bill Walsh/Holmgren coach...and instead went hard after Kelly. The front management senses that the game is changing and they want someone who's had a hand in this offensive revolution.
What people are forgetting, though, is that defenses are also going to evolve. It won't be long before defenses get guys and schemes that can slow this style of play down.
