Notre Dame runs a national program, prides itself in it. Big cities are a huge part of this for the Irish. Look at LA. how much part does the Los Angeles market and Los Angeles exposure play in making the ND-USC series so important to Notre Dame?

But when it comes to big cities, there really are only two that are huge for Notre Dame: Chicago and New York. Which one, however, is more important to the Irish:

Chicago: right in the Notre Dame's backyard (100 miles to South Bend), the Windy City is all in the neighborhood. Chicago is games scheduled at Soldier Field, alumni central, the heart of the ND-Big Ten connection, the place where the fans land and spend time before tailgating in northern Indiana. Chicago is seats in the stands at every Irish home game.

New York: the home of the subway alumni. The real connection between the greatest mass of Catholics in the US and the #1 Catholic university. Games at Yankee Stadium. the true connection between Notre Dame and the northeast corridor it so loves. The place where the media functions strongest.

so…..which of these great cities….Chicago or New York is more important to Notre Dame and has more impact on it?

It's really not close. Chicago all the way.

ND does have a good NYC metro alumni base (304K), but not that many people really care about college football in NYC. They'll always pull in a good crowd for a marquee matchup so it makes sense to have one every year in the Meadowlands, but overall, Chicago is more important.

Chicago almost definitely has more people who pay attention to Notre Dame football and attend Notre Dame games, but in terms of why Notre Dame has had the national TV contract for their home football games, New York is more important. If there weren't so many Notre Dame fans in New York and instead had a similar number of fans as other historically successful, Midwest-based, Division I-A college football programs, Notre Dame probably doesn't have a national TV contract.
