TV timeouts have ruined the college football game experience for the fans in the stands by breaking the momentum & excitement. Plus the loud jumbotron (Godzillatron in Texas's case) commercials blow out the traditional band interaction with the crowd during timeouts.
Then the schools are jacking the student ticket prices up too much for crummier seat locations.
About the impact of TV timeouts on NCAA football games:
EVERY NCAA Division III football game that I have attended has been completed WELL under three hours, some as short as 2.5 hours
Texas A&M had 38,800 students at their game last Saturday against Lamar. They will likely have more for games against SEC opponents.
But they are subject to the same issues with TV timeouts and cell phone signals as everyone else. Yet they have a very long history of strong student attendance.
I won't claim they have a magic formula. Winning with an exciting offense helps. The 12th Man originated with Texas A&M, not the Seattle Seahawks.
A couple of things they do:
- students have access to prime seats. They don't sit in the horseshoe - when there was one or now that there isn't. If they have 30,000 students at a game they are filling most of three decks between the goal lines on one side of Kyle field. Alumni and other tickets fill the rest of the stadium.
- ticket draw is done by seniority. Seniors draw tickets on Monday, Juniors Tuesday, etc.
- students get real, assigned seats. Not general admission.
- tickets aren't cheap but they are cheaper than what everyone else pays
As a Michigan fan I have to say that the lost to Notre Dame has created another meltdown. It is a shame that a once proud and powerful program is on its knees. Hoke is pretty much Ed Orgeron...well liked by the players, a very good recruiter, but not head coach material. Cheerleading on the sidelines can only take you so far. He is in over his head. The feelings of malcontent towards Dave Brandon are similar. He's a pizza man, not an AD.

The articles say the same. A CEO running an athletic department. At a U, maximizing every revenue stream may not be the best thing.

It's going to be hard to get ANY win after losing to Utah. I see no chance at beating MSU or Ohio. Yep, he looks completely lost on the sidelines. Still support Michigan through thick and thin but this isn't working and doesn't look like it will get any better after 4 years.
No time to be raising prices especially when many have the equivalent of a mini-jumbotron and reasonably priced snacks in their living room.
