This spring, the Michigan athletic department admitted what many had long suspected: Student football ticket sales are down, way down, from about 21,000 in 2012 to a projected 13,000-14,000 this season.

The department has blamed cell phones, high-definition TV and student apathy sweeping the nation. All real problems, to be sure, but they don't explain how Michigan alienated 40 percent of its students in just two years -- and their parents, too.

TV timeouts have ruined the college football game experience for the fans in the stands by breaking the momentum & excitement. Plus the loud jumbotron (Godzillatron in Texas's case) commercials blow out the traditional band interaction with the crowd during timeouts.
Then the schools are jacking the student ticket prices up too much for crummier seat locations.

The Wall Street Journal online has a good article about this today. They even mention the U of Michigan as an example.

I'm rather dreading making use of my freebie ticket to see Houston-UTSA tonight. I guess I will run on into town, but no way I would if this was a Saturday game. I can follow way too many games online compared to being at the stadium. Then again, it's an 8:00pm start and teams playing dink and dunk spread football don't run the clock much at all. I will not stay around for the end, that is for sure.

Good article. Perhaps the under table money the athletes got from Big 3 carmakers has dropped enough so that top players are going to other schools now. Lets see how good the fan base is after a few trips to El Paso for the Sun Bowl and a 7-5 record.

I'm sure the crumbling football program over the past 15+ years has nothing to do with it.

If I hear "we failed to execute" one more time from Hoke...no one wants to see a team that can't even get on the board. I'd stay home too.

Right on target here, Horn.

I also think it negatively affects the play of the team with momentum as well.

This. Actually field a great team and the fans will come. But when your team is so-so AND you jack up ticket prices, get ready to have empty seats.
