Why doesn't Utah Utes football broadcast games on any free local channels in the area?

I've lived in other places in the country, where they have broadcast their local college football team on free local channels.

Appears most of Utah Utes games are on cable.

The answer depends completely on the TV deal made by their conference. Different conferences make TV deals with different networks. Some are on cable, some are on broadcast TV.

Think of it as a price paid for being in the Pac-12. Not implying it's fair or right, or that UU should be all honored about it, just more of a 'welcome to what we put up with, a conference leadership that is all about money and the fans don't matter.'

Unfortunately, that sounds about right.

If it weren't that way, then Larry would have found a way to get the P12N on all possible outlets. My guess is that he promised the schools mega money and is afraid to backtrack on it because that would make him look bad, and in the butt-covering exec world, that's more important than making sure the fans can watch the game. Another step in the corporate horsesassization of our beloved almae matres, if my quick Latin lookup has successfully masked my fundamental failings in the language.

My biggest disgust is reserved for Mark Emmert, though, because he left UW for the NCAA (a step down in class and respect, far as I'm concerned, but great for Mark's career and probably his purse). Then has managed to impose zero real respect or consistency, unless it's the consistency of maintaining the National Conspiracy Against Athletes. Embarrassing. And of course, when the UWAA magazine mentions him, it's in hushed reverence, as if we should all be Very Impressed. Faaaaa, not so much.
