What relevance do the rankings have prior to the CFP? I don't see why they just don't wait until the conclusion of the regular season and then start ranking teams for the purposes of the Playoff and bowl matchups. At the very least, don't rank teams until they've at least played 3-4 games.

I completely agree. I think they should wait until November. I believe the first CFP rankings do not come out until then, and i think that is a good time to do them. Any time before then is just for fun/entertainment/debate topics, etc.

But then the "talking heads" like Chris Fowler wouldn't have had Louisville to gush over and state that Louisville would make the 4 team playoff.

I don't think you need polls to yap on and on about teams you think should be in the top 4 at any given point during the season.

isn't the 4 playoff teams determined by a poll of those entrusted to do the selecting?

What I am saying is that if you could wave a magic wand and no polls would appear until the first week of November it would still not stop any number of people from predicting and talking about who belongs in the top4 at the end of September.

They don't need polls to guess and rant and predict.

It would happen with or without the polls.

Preseason polls are dumb! In football, the first poll shouldn't be out until weeks 5 or 6 at the absolute earliest when teams have played 2 or 3 conference games, so we can start to separate who might be good, who might not be so good, and who's really good. In basketball they shouldn't come out with the first rankings until New Year's.

Ranking teams for the NEXT SEASON the day after the championship game is beyond stupid! You don't even know who's declaring early for the draft or transferring for Christ's sake!!

Those way-too-earlies are basically bored, biased pollsters hanging out and playing games.
