It's become fairly evident as our rigged system of establishing a "champion" via a playoff system that favors the elites unfolds, that reputation doesn't hold up in maintaining the status quo as hard as the poll system may try. Stanford, Oregon, Oklahoma, Notre Dame, Georgia, Tennessee, FSU and Miami are certainly among that group that continues to somehow become or remain relevant either through a win or bad loss to another ranked team. Meanwhile a team like Houston who has a 4 pt loss will probably fall nearly out of the Top 25 from #6. Time for a new polling system and a 16 team playoff, or don't try and pretend it's any kind of a championship like they play in FCS, Div II and Div III.
Notre Dame has not been relevant for almost thirty years, yet there is always a passel of sportswriters who are willing to pump them relentlessly in exchange for a fifth of Wild Turkey.

Navy is notoriously difficult to prepare for because their triple-option offense is so unusual. When Ohio State lost to Virginia Tech a couple of years back, some people blamed the loss on scheme adjustments they'd made to play Navy the week before. I've felt for a while that it was only a matter of time before Navy pulled off an upset.
I don't understand college football's aversion to a normal postseason. Half the Super Bowl champions of the past decade were not among the 4 highest seeded teams when the playoffs began. Of course there is more parity at the pro level, but when a good team can be disqualified by a single loss in October that makes it hard to take college football seriously.

That argument has been debunked so many times its just not valid. If you have 8 or 12 or 16 playoff spots out of 128 FBS schools, it will not water down the regular season. It could actually greatly enhance it. Not only would you have teams fighting for a playoff spot, but also fighting for seeding. Even the pathetic 4 team playoff system right now is vastly better than its every been, BCS being the worst.

Not correct. Within that 30 years they won a title, and recently played for another. Maybe they arent the powerhouse they were yesteryear, but to say they havent been relevant for 30 years is absurd.
