For the past few years, we've been hearing about Alabama's dominance, the SEC West's strength, SEC pride, etc. This was the year Alabama would show it had the greatest college football team of all-time. After Monday night, when the Crimson Tide's vaunted defense failed against Clemson late in the game; this season, when every SEC team excluding Alabama had at least 4 losses; and the last 4 years when the ACC has more national titles and the Big Ten the same number of national titles as the SEC, can we still say the SEC is the best conference (or at least the best conference besides the AFC and NFC) in America?

P.S. Thanks to BajanYankee for the inspiration.

No. I think the bowl results made that clear.

I also don't think the SEC will reach that same level of dominance. If ACC schools become more committed to building their programs, then the SEC certainly will not reach that level of dominance again since those schools are digging from the same pot of talent (LSU/Bama probably dig into TX more while ACC digs more into FL, NC, VA more and GA being about equal). Though the ACC has been known primarily as a basketball conference, I'm sure those schools don't want to leave all of that college football money on the table, and there's no reason they can't compete against SEC schools since they have more financial resources and the same geographic footprint when it comes to recruiting.

The ACC's overall better academics may be an asset in some cases and a detriment in others. A school like UVA would probably miss out on a Bo Scarbrough due to higher standards, but a school like LSU is not getting a Sam Darnold or Andrew Luck due to lower standards.

Definitely a down year for the SEC. It'll be curious to see if the ACC can maintain a high level and stay arguably the best conference. It's clear to me though that the advantage is to southern/southeastern schools in general (I'm including Texas and Oklahoma in this). Other than Ohio State, you have to go back to 1997 when Nebraska and Michigan split the title to have a team outside of that region win. The southern portion of the ACC is definitely carrying the conference. Louisville is pretty far north but they really sputtered toward the end and their offense was shut down by LSU. Virginia Tech hasn't been great recently though they weren't awful. A few NC teams were decent and held their own but it's Clemson and FSU that will be leading the conference for now. Miami should be interesting with Mark Richt moving forward.

It'll be interesting to see the SEC and ACC battle it out.

Also, FSU has 3 losses and everyone else other than Clemson has 4 losses or more so that might not be the best measure. It's really the bowl season they had with top performances that make the case.

Soooo...is the SEC still the best conference in America?
The SEC is still quite good, but not to the level it's been in the past. However, it seems that the ACC has found a rhythm and its niche -- especially in college football.

Obviously the SEC was dominant for most of the BCS era, especially the last half winning 7 in a row before their streak was snapped in 2013 by Florida State. Since the new era of the playoff system has begun we have had a total of 8 teams make an appearance and the title has been won by a different school from a different conference every year. In fact, only 4 of the 8 teams have even won a first round game and they are all from different conferences. Clearly the bulk of SEC teams were a bit down this season, and the ACC looks to be on the upswing, but it is entirely too early to proclaim anything definitive one way or the other.

Alabama = 3 appearances (3-2 record, 1 title)
Clemson = 2 appearances (3-1 record, 1 title)
Ohio St. = 2 appearances (2-1 record, 1 title)
Oregon = 1 appearance (1-1 record)
Florida St. = 1 appearance (0-1)
Oklahoma = 1 appearance (0-1)
Michigan St. = 1 appearance (0-1)
Washington = 1 appearance (0-1)

ACC is better this year. I have zero problem saying that, even though I root for an SEC team.

PAC might give the B1G a run for their money. Especially considering how poorly the B1G did in the bowl season.

Sagarin breaks it up by division, but here are his rankings for the 2016 season:

1 SEC-WEST
2 ACC-ATLANTIC
3 ACC-COASTAL
4 PAC-12(NORTH)
5 BIG 12
6 BIG TEN-EAST
7 BIG TEN-WEST
8 SEC-EAST
9 PAC-12(SOUTH)

Overall the ACC seemed better this last year. But more years than not the SEC is just deeper than the other conferences. Recruiting, rankings, bowl results backs that up
