I figured it was about time for the West Virginia Mountaineers to have their own thread. This thread will allow Mountaineer Nation to be heard on city-data, and across the globe. The 14th all-time most winning program in the nation deserves a slice of the conversation. The Mountaineers represent not just a single school or town, but an entire state and its people. Unlike other states that have large metro areas with professional sports teams, the Mountaineers have the undivided attention of the residents of West "by God" Virginia. With a blue collar population, the WVU football program is the embodiment of the hardworking spirit of the state. Our teams have not always been the greatest in terms of athleticism, prestige, or ranking, but they have always been fighters and hustlers!

With a returning 10 win team from a season ago, and a highly praised QB coming in to head up the high powered offense. Look for the Mountaineers to make some noise this year in the Big 12 race! Who knows, maybe even a playoff birth!

Let's Go!!!!!

Last Year, WVU debuted in their 125th year of football. WVU started the season underestimated by everyone and finished ranked in the top 20.

If I were a West Virginia fan, I would petition the NCAA to strip Notre Dame of its 1988-1989 title "victory" against West Virginia because there were credible allegations of steroid abuse against ND.

Steve Huffman was a former ND player who quit the team in 1988 when Holtz was the coach. His claims of steroid abuse hit Sports Illustrated magazine in 1990 (among other places). But the NCAA did not do anything at the time. Players knew how to beat the test. The book by the "Boz" noted rampant steroid abuse for college football at the time. ND was no exception. The campus also had a problem with white racism because many students were from the 'white flight suburbs' and could not get along with minorities on campus. That was Notre Dame's last "championship". It seems like they have been hit with "Divine Retribution" and have never gotten to that level again. Note the one-sided loss against Alabama in 2013.

If Major Harris would have stayed healthy that game WVU would have moped them! I'd love to play Notre Dame again someday.

Mountaineer Update:

Here is a good read concerning the installation of a new scoreboard in the north end zone courtesy of the Smoking Musket.

Also here's a look at how the "after-party" draft went for the Mountaineers last week. Aside from Rasul Douglas and Shelton Gibson being drafted to the Philadelphia Eagles (3rd & 5th rounds), 10 Mountaineers signed with teams in free agency status.

Mountaineer Update:

With less than a month and a half to go until the season gets underway, I wanted to update EERNation on things going on up in Touchdown City (Morgantown).

1. First let's start with arguably the most important bit of breaking news! Coach Dana Holgerson will no longer be allowed to drink Red Bull on the sidelines, as he is now contractually obligated to drink Monster energy drinks. Coca Cola, who owns Monster, has been a long time sponsor of Mountaineer athletics and has pushed for Dana's change in gameday fuel!

Report: WVU coach Holgorsen signs contract with Monster Energy Drinks | CollegeFootballTalk

2. WVU has been been projected finishing 6th in the Big 12 this season by several "experts". I am absolutely fine with the Mountaineers receiving no credit for the firepower on offense that we have returning from last season, the 10 wins from last year, the returning leading rusher in the conference, arguably the two best safeties in the conference, and a new comer QB that is projected to be among the best in the country! If the Mountaineers can utilize all of those advantages this season plus produce an offensive and defensive line that will hold their own, WVU will certainly finish better than 6th. My guess within the top 3 in the conference.

3. Work is starting to wrap up on stadium renovations. The West Concourse expansion and overhaul will mirror the work completed on the opposite side that debuted last season. The amenities that this project will bring to Mountaineer Field will place game day experiences on par with any other facilities in the country. Also the installation of a new scoreboard in the North endzone is well underway and should be completed before the first home game.

The first game is only 45 days away!

West Virginia vs Virginia Tech

Sunday September 3rd @ 7:00 PM (Played at FedEx Field in Landover, MD)

Let's Go turkey hunting!!!

Mountaineer Update:

11 Days left until the Mighty Mounts open up their season with the gobblers at Fed-up field! Both teams debuted in the preseason top 25 with the turks coming in one spot ahead at 21st. Hopefully the disrespect by the media will fuel a Mountaineer victory. Both teams appear to be pretty evenly matched, but we will see come Sept 3.

Here are some of the headlines going into the last week and a half.

https://www.smokingmusket.com/2017/8...d-wvu-football

Comment: WVU will have a 3 headed monster at running back this year, featuring the returning leading rusher in the Big 12 Justin Crawford. We should be able to put up some serious yardage in the ground game, particularly against weak conference defenses. VT should be a good test for the strength here.

Comment: I wish this kid nothing but the best! He was exciting to watch his first season, and had some big plays last season including this awesome snag!

Comment: If you've never been to Mountaineer Field at Milan Puskar Stadium, then these renovations wouldn't seem that impressive to you. But if you have (before 2016 season), you would notice the major upgrade that has taken place in terms of fan amenities. The restroom and concession areas have been completely rebuilt and expanded, adding much needed walking room thru the concourses. Each corner of the stadium now has elevators and widened stairs, and there is actually a few new points of entry. The scoreboard addition is just the cherry on top. The stadium basically looks brand new now, as opposed to its 1980 funk that it featured for over 35 years.

Less than a week now!

Week One Predictions:

Opponent: #21 Virginia Tech
All time series: 28-22-1 WVU leads
Last game:2005 // #3 VT (34) @ WVU (17) note: this was the only game WVU lost in the 2005 season, and would go on to win the Big Esst and beat Georgia in the Sugar Bowl.

Predictions:

WVU will score often in this game as William Greir throws for 2 TDs and over 350 in the air. The WVU ground game will rush for over 200, with Multiple RBs reaching the endzone. The Defense will be pushed around in the first half, but will make the adjustments needed for holding the gobblers off in the second half!

Final Score: WVU (45) VT (31).

Let's Go!!!!

Chris, u were spot-on with V'Tech's score..
It was a nice, tense game. I was rooting for Va Tech, but was impressed with WVU's passing game. Their QB looked good, & this receiver David Sills V had a damn good game.. 9 catches, almost 100 yards & 2 TDs.
