uhm last years championship game was the MOST watched game all year since the last championship game ...
And that was because of the excitement Deshaun Watson brought to the table. He was the most exciting player to watch in CFB last year and the most exciting player to watch in the NFL this year. Nobody wants to see Bama-Georgia outside of the Confederacy.

Meh.. Anybody who enjoys and understands the college game will be watching the FBS Championship. The narrative is pretty good. Former assistant facing former head coach & mentor in a heated rivalry border war game that also may help determine the college choice of several top national recruits.
I'm certain this game holds way more appeal than in just the "Confederacy".

All that is true except calling Alabama and Georgia a rivalry.

Two defensive-oriented, run-first offenses are not going to draw the number of eyeballs as a more up tempo, creative, gunslinging offense. Last night's Sugar Bowl was a snooze fest, way less exciting than the Rose Bowl, and I expect to the Bama-Georgia game to be the same.

But more New Yorkers would tune in if it were ND/Michigan/OSU/USC, etc. A media market of nearly 24 million people, which also happens to be the wealthiest market in America, shouldn't be so readily dismissed.
The ratings keep slipping each year:
2015 - Ohio State vs Oregon: 18.5
2016 - Alabama vs Clemson: 15.8
2017 - Alabama vs Clemson: 15.3
2018 - Alabama vs Georgia: ???
So we've got two southern schools again with a far less interesting matchup than the year before. Should be great for ratings. /s

Certainly not denying ratings could be decreasing. Are those just Nielsen TV ratings? There are many forms of media to view and obtain data for major sporting events now without tuning into live TV. I'm curious does this calculate those watching live streams from other sources using various devices?

There you have it... UCF will be nothing more than a great mid major.
If that. It's a coach's game and Scott is a great coach, which is why Nebraska snapped him up. But until UCF puts together 3-4 more seasons near the level they just had, it will be a flash in the pan. The only team that really has moved up from the mid-majors into a power conference was Utah.
But one great season does not a dynasty make.
I mean, 27 years ago, Georgia Tech and Colorado shared the crown before slipping back into the pack.
Tulane had a perfect season in 1998. Top ten ranking.
Brigham Young went 14-1 in 1996. Top ten ranking.
Marshall was 13-0 in 1999. Top ten ranking.
Cincinnati was 12-1 in 2009. Top ten ranking.
