You forgot the big matchup between the Oklahoma Sooners and the South Dakota Coyotes.

These are the kind of non-conference games that all the top football programs are trying to get to pad their records rather than playing someone of their own caliber and risk a loss.

The ENTIRE athletic budget for USD (all sports including scholarships) is $ 12.9 million.

Just the PAY for Oklahoma's head football coach is $ 6 million PLUS incentives for staying and performance jumping this figure well over another $ 1 million.

I'm a Coyote booster, but I'm also a realist. This game makes no sense. USD took the game for the money Oklahoma's paying them obviously.

I'm surprised S. Dakota has a team given the climate. Does it play in a dome?

Unless Oklahoma has improved significantly on defense, I could see an upset happening. They lost a lot on their O-line and have a primarily running QB in Hurts.

USD plays in the Dakota Dome which seats less than 10,000. The only dome in North Dakota is the Fargo Dome where NDSU plays. ALL other colleges in North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Montana, AND Minnesota play outside. Brings another level of toughness to the game.

USD is actually larger enrollment wise than Notre Dame, but plays a step down from the top divisions when it comes to football in the Missouri Valley Conference. As mentioned, the athletic budgets between the 2 programs are light years apart.

There isn't any upset happening here. We can't possibly compete for the same caliber of athletes. LAST year USD did almost knock off Kansas State losing in the last minutes though.

The reason that Oklahoma is playing South Dakota is that Oklahoma was supposed to play LSU this year and it fell through. It was supposed to be a home and home thing. They replaced LSU with USD for one year and Missouri State for the other one.

Interesting. What made the LSU game fall through? With both teams being perenially powerful teams and playing in different conferences, it "appears" to be mutually beneficial for both of the teams not to play each other. This is purely outsider speculation on my part since this avoiding of potential losses with non-conference foes has seemed to have reached epidemic proportions.

I don't know why the series fell through but the games were rescheduled for '27 and '28. I remember when the original series fell through Oklahoma was scrambling to find a replacement game (this happened around 2014-15) and South Dakota was who they could find to put in that slot at a late date. The pick was criticized in Oklahoma by fans and the press because USD is FCS, so it received a lot of criticism for the reasons you mentioned.

A lot of these home and home series tend to fall apart at the last minute. LSU had scheduled home and home with NC State last year and the year before but someone backed out. Ohio State had a home and home scheduled with North Carolina about 3 years ago that was cancelled at the last minute and UNC settled for Illinois, the Buckeyes also once had a series with Vanderbilt that got nixed. There's been a lot of decent early season meetings between power 5 conference teams that end up going to waste, sometimes schools like ECU, Southern Miss, Marshall, Memphis, USF and UCF might get a call but usually we get P5 schools calling up the likes of U of Phoenix and SW Arkansas Tech to take their place.

Because their QB play is abysmal. Remember, the week before they beat Georgia remember they lost to Florida?? When's the last good QB for LSU?? Jamarcus Russell in 2007?? A defense and running game can only get you so far. If they fell behind early they were completely screwed because they couldn't move the ball downfield.

Here's hoping USD gives them a game. Lately they've done just that against FBS teams. A few years ago they beat Minnesota at Minnesota. USD was only a .500 team that year too. Granted, the Gophers aren't in the caliber of the Sooners.

I actually kicked it around to go down to Norman to attend the game and wear USD red. However, what I've been told, I really won't stick out in the stands with that color.
