if USC would play an SEC or big 12 team in the beginning of the season more often than maybe USC can claim numero dos

but Pac-10 is not that strong this year anyways, and USC lost to beavers who were eaten by mountain lions from mount nittany in Pennsylvania (that was horrible)

I don't really see the point in that debate, conference games are far tougher than OOC games, it doesn't matter what team you play they can still be tricky, sure Penn State beat the Beavers convincingly but Penn State would not blow out USC, and if they won it would be very close.

my point is USC has a weaker schedule than TT, Okla, Tex, Florida

if USC gets into the Champ Game because they win their conference, than why cant PSU be that game?

I love USC. I also believe they are one of the top 2 teams in the country and the best team of this decade. I think they'd blow out any team at a bowl game as they normally do. But they deserve to be where they are, be it their fault or not.

One, the Pac-10 sucks right now. And I know that isn't USC's fault, but they have to take it. The Pac-10 posted horrendous numbers against non-conference teams, especially the MWC and you have teams such as Washington 0-11; WSU 2-11; UCLA 4-7; Stanford 5-7 and ASU 5-6.

Secondly, being that they are in a weak conference, there is no reason to lose to a non-ranked team (at the time) that ends up squeaking into a #17 ranking with an 8-4 record. NONE! An Oregon State team that lost to Stanford!

Though USC tried to do, as they always do, what they could by playing a serious team (OSU and Virginia which are normally decent at worst) their spot at #5 is well deserved from both factors that they could and couldn't control. After losing to Oregon State I was hoping that other teams such as Alabama, Texas, Oklahoma, Florida would choke somewhere along, and I will hope that they squeak in somehow/someway, but if not I will be neither shocked nor disappointed. They should have learned in the years prior that you dont lose out to a Oregon State type team (no dissing on Oregon State) and feel entitled to a National Championship game with an 11-1 record.

I didn't say USC should get into the Champ game beacuase they won their conference, and I think they or PSU should not. I still beleive though USC could play with anyone at the moment despite their schedule.

I believe that there are at least five teams that could be any of the others on any given day. USC's problem is that their conference needs to stepup the level of competition within. The Big twelve and SEC have gotten the recruiting advantage with the realignment of conferences.

Why because they won their bowl game?

Utah went undefeated, beat a top 2 SEC team by a good margin. Utah also beat Oregon St who if you recall beat USC.

I agree with texdav, an number of teams could make this claim.

On the basis of what?
Because their loss to oregon State was a quality loss or because they shine against teams with losing records?
I wouldn't count either of their wins vs Big-10 as quality wins. Sorry.

The Utes also beat Michigan by 2 ;air force by 7;new mexico by 3 and TCU by 3;not a dominating season. By those standards Texas should be co-champs but tehy are not. Remember they beat Oklahoma on a nuural field by 10 points;scoring 45 points, USC just is by far the class of the PAC ten which is part of their problems really. The PAC ten needs to stepup there football programs which many have gone downhill rather than up.
