2. There is talk of creating a possible bowl game in NYC. (Mainly for it's number 2 team). It would be held in Yankee Stadium or the Meadowlands. Yankee Stadium is already signed up for Army and Irish games.
General concensus on the ESPN message boards is MD/BC wouldn't give up the ACC money. MD is thouroughly an ACC B-ball bruiser and BC seems to make good money in the ACC. Although some ACC fans think that BC hasn't offered much to the conference, but anyway.
I think the NY Bowl game would be pretty neat (although kinda expensive) and I am of the "Football is cooler in cold weather" sort so....
I wonder if the conference has enough credibility and dollars to handle such a deal however.
That leads to the question of wiether these moves are of ambition or desperation? Will the conference continue to expand, does it need to? Will one school be able get into the national 25 rankings for a few years?
(Honestly, just looking at the history of the schools, if Pitt, 'Cuse and WVU get it's act together they can at least add some credibility.)
It is all about the conference championship game. NCAA rules prohibit conferences from staging the conference title game if you have fewer than 12 teams. Rather than change the rule; the NCAA would rather see conferences raid other conferences to stage those games.
The Big 10 is looking not only at those Big East schools, but Mizzou and Iowa State as well. However, word on the street is they are drooling over the prospect of snagging Rutgers.
If the old adage of "follow the money" is right, it will be Rutgers joining the Big 10 soon enough. The Big 10 would get a championship game and a team in the NYC television market, and Rutgers would get a piece of the Big 10 money-making machine.
And that would be pretty much the death knell for Big East football right there.
Why hasn't the Big East begged independents Navy and Army to join? It's obvious Notre Dame will never join a conference.
while I fully understand your thinking on Notre Dame, I'm not so sure. ND is living in the past. You can't bring back 20th century glory and you can't go it alone any more in the 21st. At some point, reality might kick in a drag ND into a conference. If it's lucky, that conference would be the Big Ten.
So what about the Big East? Well, if Penn State exercised its options and stayed at home (something it couldn't have done when it joined the Big Ten since there was no major eastern conference at the time) would be to swtich from the Big Ten to the Big East. It could be a great fit and PSU would be more likely to be totally dominant in the Big East than it would be in the Big Ten (don't forget that dominance was one of the reasons FSU wanted into the ACC back then).
My dream (as a Chicagoan) would be that Notre Dame joined the conference and that mission impossible occurred with the Univ of Chicago rejoining as it reembraced big time football. Of course, that won't happen, but it would create a might group of 12 midwestern universities, all at least academic powerhouses.
I don't think the Big East wants football-only members. And even if they did, Army and Navy are simply not top-tier teams. They would fit better in the MAC.
