Hi everyone,
My husband is a Mechanical Engineer student - senior year, and last semester, after he did an internship, he almost wanted to quit his school because he says that he didn't get to do "cool" stuff, and that other engineers ( at work ) told him that engineers don't get to do all that cool stuff and new projects even when they are done with school. Are there any M.E.'s who are really satisfied with their job?

Yes, my husband...

BUT he has been out of school for over 15 years (also has a Masters' as well as a BS) and is doing nuclear engineering work for GE now.

He works on these: Advanced Boiling Water Reactor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This field is GROWING. Liz

My husband was also an ME major. He works in the nuclear industry as well and he does a lot of hands on type stuff. He likes his job a lot and says he could never do a desk job. he likes to get his hands dirty and that's pretty much what he gets to do!

You can remind him that that is life . No one gets the best assignments right out of college, you get all the grunt work and then work your way up after you prove yourself. It works that way in every job.

Also getting a P.E. is also a good thing from a career standpoint...my father was a mechanial engineer (35 years experience and now at the top of the corp ladder)..but I remember he used to take the Professional Engineering licenses and classes to "keep him in the loop"..he started out working for nuclear stuff....and its managerial or directoral for as long as I can remember..but you do need to prove yourself..at least that is what I remember.

Yes, it is...

Also, being a member of ASME helps too. Liz

Well, I guess he'll have a long while to go. I mean Masters, then other stuff...It seems that you cannot do much these days ( at least in that field ) with just a Bachelor Degree...

lastra, tell him to be patient. It WILL pay off. Our income has more than tripled in less than 10 years. And my husband's job satisfaction is worth every DIME of those degrees. Liz
