I am trying to go back to school to get my Master's Degree....I have been in contact with NC State and I just stumbled onto Strayer's Website. They have the same program and the prices are not bad (for both colleges), but my question is will an employer RESPECT a degree from Strayer?
I want to go back to school for Management Information Systems.
Also do you know anything about the job outlook for Management Information Systems?
When I did IT staffing for 3.5 years (just left the industry a month ago), we did respect them, but we did not give them nearly as much credit as a Masters from a NC State, UNC, etc.
Were you in the MIS field? If so what was the job outlook for MIS?
When you say mention a pay difference are you talking 20k or more in regards to pay?

Anecdotally, I'd say no. For-profit colleges are getting an especially bad rap these days as congress mulls over whether or not they should even receive federal funding. If the prices are comparable, definitely go for State.

An Employment forum--not local--is the best place to ask this kind of question.
I wouldn't take a degree from Strayer seriously, especially a graduate degree. I don't exactly encounter any published articles from their faculty and students. I don't know how they could possibly be offering a rigorous masters level program.
Also, since MIS isn't really an academic discipline, I assume you are applying to MBA programs. Since MBAs are a bit of an elitist thing, you probably wouldn't be taken seriously with a Strayer degree.
You might also consider UNC's Masters of Information Science degree.

If your job simply requires getting your ticket punched, it may not matter. Otherwise, I think a not-for-profit brick and mortar school is the way to go. Many state and private NFP colleges and universities are offering on line degrees in order to get the non traditional student/working professional. Why go to Strayer if you can go to NC State?
Honestly the application process to Strayer is a breeze. No application fee, no GRE requirements and I can start in January.
That right there should tell you something. Any grad school that doesn't have a GRE requirement will not be taken seriously.
As someone said earlier, if it on the NYSE do not take it seriously. Why is that? It just means the school is more interested in generating return for the shareholder (in fact it means they have a fiduciary duty to admit as many students as possible, and churn out as many degrees as possible in order to return value to the shareholder). They are a "diploma mill." The degree would not be worth the paper it is printed on... If someone came to me with a degree from University of Phoenix, or Strayer University, I would laugh them out of my office. I would take a degree from Houston Community College more seriously.
Go to NC State instead. That is a real school.
