Up until the past decade or so, men were earning college degrees at a higher number than their female counterparts. And aside from athletic awards, scholarships specifically for men were not very common.
But a 2010 report by the American Council on Education shows that males account for only 43 percent of students enrolled in postsecondary education. Since the gender gap in college enrollment has swung in the other direction, scholarships for men are now an important way to help males continue to enroll in college and keep earning those degrees.
The dirty little secret is that women go after degrees which, statistically, make less money. Men are going after the hard sciences like chemistry, engineering, computer science etc. While women are going after psychology, sociology, social work and anthropology. The only real good fields for women are probably nursing and med school.
Even if less men are graduating they are graduating with degrees that are more marketable and in-demand than what the women are graduating with.

Yep, there are more women enrolled in medical school today than men. There is also a strong female presence in the medical sciences as well.
This probably has more to do with the different opportunities non-college educated men have over women. There are many well paying careers that don't require a "college education" that are largely male oriented.....
Part of the problem in today's culture is an over focus on college degrees, its especially troubling when college degrees have become so watered down.
I was reading about how many colleges are accepting below-average male applicants, just to help balance out the gender ratio. Neither guys nor girls want to go to a school that is too disproportionately female. The book I was reading talked about how girls are generally given more societal encouragement to pursue education than many males, for whom sports is often a greater concern. I know when I went to elementary school it seemed like there were more studious, well behaved females than there were males. All us guys wanted to do was go out to recess.
