I plan to continue my education after becoming a police officer to have better chances of moving up the ranks. Obviously Law degree "looks better", but I will be a regular cop, not prosecutor or a lawyer. Would it then be "overkill" to study law? What positions could open up to me with Master's in CJ?

You'll be hard pressed to pay back your school loans on a street cops salary.

The experience of being a cop could come in handy of you are going to be a lawyer but why go to all the time work and money for a DEG that you may never use or get compensated for?

Promotions come from performance.

It is smart to take classes that will benefit you as you climb the ranks, I agree, but at some point it's over kill.

Computer science or something similar could be more beneficial if your looking for a desk job in the future.

Any military experience?

Or ask the chief what he looks for, what classes or what DEG he thinks is beneficial at this time.

Just some ideas.

I'm glad that I didn't need a 4yr deg as it may have deterred me from law enforcement. I just took intro to criminology for my AAS.

I don't have military exp, not looking for a desk job.
It's all good, we are just expressing ourselves. Everyone's situation is different.

Yeah, no point in a law degree if you have no plans to ever be a lawyer. Law school will just be unneeded stress that will put you in loads of debt. Not worth it if you want to make your career as a cop.
