My original plan was to work as a Graphic Designer so I went to my local community college and received my Associates Degree in Fine Arts. To make a long story short I basically took 2 school years off since then. In that time I started feeling like I wanted to also branch out into other types of work such as doing voice overs and getting into acting.
Well my main purpose is to get my Bachelors Degree as soon as possible now. The only problem is during that 2 year time I seem to have run into a crossraod of what it is I want to do, or if I will even be able to find a job doing something I like after I graduate.
Not sure if this is something I created in my mind because I had alot of time to over analyze, or a sign telling me to do something else. But this leads to my question now....
I am still trying to finish my original plan, and I applied to a few different schools that have Graphic Design programs, the only thing is the degrees they offer are all called something different.
One school is an art school that offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts. The other school is more of a national technical school and they offer a Bachelor of Science. The third school i'm looking into, which is a university offers a Bachelor of Communications Design.
Sorry about the long post, but which degree would be more suitable for me? My main emphasis is still Graphic Design....
Thanks, yes you are right about finding a degree that would be more financially beneficial to me. I'm just hoping i'm not going through some quarter-life crisis.
I dont know if i'm able to live a life on a routine schedule in an office. I do like structure because without it I get lazy, but I dont want to feel there is no room for growth either.
I have a good amount of knowledge in Graphic Design but I also have a love for imagination and pretending (which is what acting is). I just never realized life could be so confusing.
You want to get a BFA in Graphic Design if you have the option. That is the best Graphic Design degree to get.
A Bachelor's of Communication is not usually a Graphic Design oriented degree or field and would probably just have 2 or 3 courses related to visual communications
A B.S. in Graphic Design is usually a technical school that isn't going to be as good as the BFA. They usually gear more towards a particular field such as video games or movies or packaging. In a BFA you are going to have more opportunity to get a broad education in Graphic Design both as practice and history, you will also get heavy training in typography and print techniques. It is absolutely, unequivocally the best option for you.
You either want a BFA or you should seriously look into Miami Ad School, VCU BrandCenter, or a few other similar choices. Those places like VCU and Miami Ad School are truly great places if you not only know you want to do Graphic Design but want to do it for an ad agency. If you want to do Graphic Design more as a fine art, as information design, getting into interactive design, perhaps going on for an MFA then you want to stay focused on the BFA programs.
